The Donald fires Clint Black after he loses songwriting task and picks rivals comedian Joan Rivers and poker player Annie Duke to be the final two of Celebrity Apprentice. Trump fired Brande Roderick and Jesse James after input from Piers Morgan Here’s how it happened.
Joan Rivers returned to Clint and Jesse. The task was for each team to compose a new jingle and 30-second radio commercial for Chicken of the Sea tuna. For Joan and Jesse, making Clint Black, a multi-award winning songwriter, was a no-brainer. For the Annie-Brande team, Annie became project manager out of default and not talent.They started behind and they knew it.
As expected, Clint Black wrote a terrific jingle and recorded it with his voice, guitar and a back-up band in a sound studio. Jesse and Joan felt it should have a faster tempo and Joan kept pushing for a splash sound at the end of the jingle but as project manager Clint decided to go with his version which had a lazy lull to it. On the commercial, Joan and Jesse were the voices to a quiz-show theme to get the product message across. Annie and Brande struggled but did pull it together with a jingle and a commercial with a busy-mom theme. But Clint Black is a country music star and ironically the execs decided the country-style jingle would not be suitable for the wide audience they need to reach. Annie and Brande won.
The Board Room was easy. Since Clint wrote the jingle and was also project manager, he heard the dreaded words,“Clint, you’re fired.”
Trump asked season one Celebrity Apprentice winner and America’s Got Talent judge, Piers Morgan, to interview the final four. These were his thoughts: Brande wasn’t smart enough and selecting her would demean the show. Joan Rivers had energy for a 75-year old but her rage against Annie Duke is too extreme. Annie is a poker player and can handle the attacks and pressure and has raised the most money. And, Jesse, despite being married to world famous movie star, Sandra Bullock, hasn’t raised much money or shown much passion.
PR lesson learned
Bring all you have to your work. Don’t hold back the buffet – bring all you have to your work, team, product, charity. From talent, contacts, innovation, passion – the time to strike is now – not later.
