In honor of the memory of Delaware River Port Authority Police Cpl. Christopher Milito, PATCO trains crossing the Ben Franklin Bridge on Thursday morning, Jan. 21, will alter their operations.
From 4 to 6 a.m., trains entering and exiting the subway tunnel at the bridge's Philadelphia end will not sound their horns and operate at restricted speed so as not to disturb the funeral procession for Cpl. Milito, which will form at the bridge's west end beginning at 5 a.m., then proceed to the Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul, 18th Street and Ben Franklin Parkway, for a viewing and Mass of Christian Burial starting at 7 a.m.
Also, from 4 a.m. to noon, all PATCO trains crossing the bridge in both directions will pause at the span's summit and sound one long blast of their horns in honor of Cpl. Milito.
The veteran DRPA police officer was struck and killed by a vehicle in the early morning hours of Saturday, Jan. 16, while crossing five lanes of traffic on the Walt Whitman Bridge to assist a fellow officer investigating an accident on the span. Milito was widely respected by his fellow officers and known for his willingness to assist motorists in trouble.
