Being from Ohio originally, I'm all too trusting. Friends tell me to be wary when someone asks for the time; he's usually trying to distract me so his accomplice can come up behind me and whack me on the head to steal my stylish patent leather clutch. And when obviously mentally ill people sit down next to me on the subway, I don't make a big deal about getting up right away like other people do.
But then a schizophrenic panhandler Stephen McKenzie had to go and stab an undercover cop with a screwdriver on a Utica Ave. subway platform last night after asking for a cigarette and being refused. And not just any screwdriver but a sharpened screwdriver. Way to GO, Steve. Now in addition to simply ignoring panhandlers, I'm going to actively hate them.
On a positive note, the green line was shut down for hours afterward, with darkened trains rolling silently through Union Square. Or, you know, as silently as a train can. It was beautiful in an extra-creepy way.
