On the back of Michael Jackson’s death being ruled a homicide, the Huffington Post is reporting that New York City Councilwoman Letitia James is petitioning to rename the subway station where the King of Pop’s 1987 music video for “Bad” was shot. Because the only thing better than Hoyt-Schermerhorn station is Hoyt-Schermerhorn-Jackson station, right?
If Councilwoman James can’t get the MTA to go for the station name change, she’ll settle for a commemorative plaque, but the MTA says even that is unlikely. In the New York Post article on the subject, MTA sources say that naming stations after individuals could confuse riders, but I don’t remember that being a big problem when Barclays bought the right to rename the Atlantic-Pacific subway hub back in July.
Maybe the controllers of Jackson’s estate–whoever that ends up being–should step in and help Ms. James out with a hefty donation for that plaque to see if the MTA will change its tune.

I think Michael SHOULD at least have his name on a plaque or something. If he shot the music video for "Bad" there, then they should inform riders that so he can be recognized. And, I think he seserves it there.

Where's Gov. Bloggo when you need him?!
Ashlee - I don't necessarily think renaming the station is a great idea, but the plaque seems so obvious to me. I've wondered where the "Bad" video was filmed every time I've seen it, and a plaque is about the least-intrusive way to remind everyone who passes through the station.
McAfrokee - There's something a little exciting about living in a world where everything can be bought and sold, right? Creepy and gross . . . but exciting.
I think it's a great idea, they should do it.
