If you were to just step off one of the train stations, there are certainly some that give you much more to do and more interesting things to see than others. Here is a list of the top five most walkable areas around MARTA for urban exploring or sight-seeing:
5. Arts Center
Exit here for access to Atlantic Station (take the shuttle or you can walk over the 17th Street Bridge) and just about every arts venue imaginable -- from theater, comedy, puppets to art and the symphony at the Woodruff Arts Center. Food choices could be a little better in variety, but there is enough if you need a bite and know where to look.
4. Buckhead
Surrounding the Buckhead station is the new Peachtree Road streetscape with wide sidwalks, benches, two malls, hotels galore and restaurants.
3. Peachtree Center
There is a hustle and bustle around the Peachtree Center MARTA during the workday and it is one of the most urban destinations in the city that is comfortable to walk around. Step onto the street and be surrounded by towering office buildings and hotels, dine at a restaurant overlooking Peachtree Street, catch a carriage ride in the evening or walk to the Children's Museum, World of Coke, Georgia Aquarium and Centennial Olympic Park.
2. Midtown
Midtown has a high walkability factor for everyday living -- two grocery stores (Publix and Trader Joes), movie theater, plenty of nightlife and fine dining as well as easy access to Piedmont Park. You can also easily walk to the North Avenue and Arts Center stations from Midtown and have plenty of transit options to other parts of the city.
1. Decatur
For a more relaxed adventure, exit at the downtown Decatur MARTA station and be surrounded by quaint shops, coffee and dessert joints, many restaurants and even a historic courthouse and gazebo. Regular festivals are offered and enjoy nightlife at destinations such as Eddie's Attic, Twains and the Brickstore. Almost every venue is within a 10 minute walking distance, and while Midtown might have more connections to the rest of the city, the safety and short walking distances make it the most walkable.
