Now is not the time to play the name game.

Did I miss something, I thought we were cutting back, down -sizing, scaling back due to the recession? So why would the board propose name changes to existing schools? I can understand naming new schools, but renaming existing schools, when teachers are being fired is a slap in the face. Does this not have cost associated with it such as the marquee’s in front of the schools, and the name on the side of the school’s building just to name a few. Funds could be better spent in the classrooms of campuses that have recently experienced deep budget cuts.

Has Board Trustee Nancy Bingham bumped her head? How could she suggest naming a school after Adelfa Callejo after the racist statement s she made in February 2008 during the campaign season which caused an up roar of not only black people but her own people. Now is not the time for Nancy Bingham to propose naming a building after Adelfa Callejo , not when society as a whole does not see eye to eye with her form of racism in 2008 nor 2009: never.

The standards used to naming facilities use to state, “The names of living persons shall not be considered”. Now the wording has changed to the following,” A facility or a portion thereof shall not be named after or in honor of any individual, unless such individual has attained 70 years of age or has been deceased at least 18 months, or such naming is a condition of a gift or grant accepted by the District”. So just like anything else the Cotton Bowl, the American Airlines Center you can pay to have your name displayed on a school building or a portion there of.
