The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is praising one of there own today for his heroic rescue of an elderly resident from a house fire.
On Sunday, March 7 HCSO received a 911 call at 3:37 am and were left with an open line. The call came from 12106 N Boulevard. While Deputies were en route a second 911 call was received and indicated it was a house fire at that address.
The first person to arrive at the scene was HCSO Deputy Joe Devore. When he arrived, he assisted two of the residents that made it outside, but was informed that there was another person still in the home. Devore entered the home to affect the rescue, inside he found Robie Hurst, 71 and quickly brought her to safety.
"Smoke was so thick you couldn't even see your hand in front of your face," said Devore. Hurst was located near the doorway of the residence, and according to Devore she was conscious.
Devore says upon his arrival "the house was fully involved with so much smoke you could not see the house next door." Additional Deputies arrived on the scene and noticed that the home next door had caught fire. Deputies awakened the residents and evacuated them to safety.
Two of the residents of 12106 N Boulevard were transported to the hospital. Robie Hurst, 71 was taken to University Community Hospital and Rhonda O'Neal was taken to Tampa General Hospital.
"It's part of the job, I had the opportunity to help these people out, and I did" said Devore. The HCSO has indicated that Deputy Devore will be submitted for a HCSO Life Saving Award for his heroic actions. Devore received no injuries during this incident.
