Councilman Carl DeMaio is standing in the Mayor's way on terminating trash collection service for more than 14,000 residences and units.
The Mayor's office released their plan to end the trash collection services at the February 2 meeting of the Natural Resources & Culture committee.
"I strongly oppose this action," DeMaio said. "Cutting off basic services and imposing a higher cost-of-living on San Diegans should be the last, not first, option selected in our mutual efforts to balance the city's budget."
He says both the City Council and the Mayor need to act to end the collections. He defended local voters by taking the position Mayor Sanders has to stick to the dozens of "hold harmless agreements" voters approved in the 1986 amendment to the People's Ordinance. The agreements, he said, were made by the city as an institution. Voters were assured trash collection services would continue.

DeMaio proposed two other options to make government more efficient--reform pensions and carry out the managed competition plan for city trash.
