During an appearance this morning on CNBC, Representative Anthony Weiner (D-NY) stated that a health care reform bill that does not contain a government-sponsored health insurance plan would not pass in Congress. Mr. Weiner, who sits on the House judiciary and energy and commerce committees, noted that 100 members of the House believe that a government-sponsored health care insurance plan will help keep insurance rates down and that any attempts by the President Obama to dump the public option as part of a deal with the Senate would cost him votes in the House. Mr. Weiner personally favors a single-payer plan. "A public plan tethered to Medicare will help bring down rates", said Mr. Weiner. Published reports in the Associated Press and the New York Times over the weekend state that the Obama administration may be moving away from a government-sponsored plan. Yesterday, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius noted that a public option was only a sliver of the president's health care reform policy.

If the Dems cannot pass this bill WITH A PUBLIC HEALTH CARE OPTION, I give up. They have lost my vote at every level in every election for years to come.
For God's sake, show some spine and ram this through.
Art,
I agree with you.. Why are our elected officials cowering to the for profit health insurance companies who have caused our healthcare nightmare??? I will not vote for my freshman democratic member of congress if she buckles on the public option.. We voted for change not the same crap we've been forced to live with these past 8 years..
Are you all at the white house and Move on , just nuts, our family has Non hodgkins lymphoma, breast cancer , we pay for our top quality health care ,I would be very angry if your program causes our insurance company not to be able to compete with the government program, that is funded by the government and what are you doing about all of Americans and illegal immigrants , who pay nothing into our heathcare system, why should hard working americans pay for them!

Re: Health Care Reform; Easy, Simple Solutions
Let the 47 million families without healthcare be able to sign up for Medicare.
Everyone else can keep what they have if they so choose.
Medicare; an efficiently Government run operation for over 45 years.
Ask anyone who is on Medicare and Social Security.
We get to choose our own Doctors and Hospital Care.
The Government has run efficient and excellent health care for Senators, Congress and the Military for over 45 years. Medicare Overhead is less than 10% whereas private companies exceed 30%
A healthier population means a healthier economy, less sick days, Increased Productivity, and Employment, Higher salaries, more education and increased tax base.
Future health care costs go down as more preventive medicine for the young, reduces future health problems.
Hospital Costs significantly reduced as the previously uninsured will no longer require ER facilities paid for by the hospitals.

We wouldn't even be having this conversation were it not for the health insurance company lobby paying millions of dollars to protect their right to profit from the illness of our fellow citizens. Millions have no insurance at all, and others are going bankrupt even though they are insured. Yes, please show some spine.
If the president does not have the guts to stand up and get this bill passed with public option I am through with him and the democrats. Lyndon Johnson got us medicare and had everything against him, He had the backbone and courage of his convictions.
If Obama lets us down on health reform, we can't count on him for anything. Health reform without public option is no health reform.
