Taking step by step the “Reinventing Montreal” transportation plan during the next decade, the city launches as of March 23rd, 2010, a series of modern tramway exhibitions along the sites of the first future route. Their purpose is to show out the advantages of a tramway network that will reinforce the collective transportation system in central Montreal, where the highest residential and commercial density is located.

The first line will run for 12.5 kilometres along Peel, De La Commune and Berri Streets and Rene Levesque Boulevard., and then take Guy and Cote des Neiges to Jean Talon Street. The estimated cost of this project is calculated to $750 million, which is about 3 times less expensive if a subway line would be built on the same route. The Phase I research supposes an average of 95.000 to 110.000 Montrealers who will use the line each day. The tramway line will contribute to the development of such strategic sectors as Griffintown, the Viger Pole, the Outremont campus of Universite de Montreal, Quartier des spectacles, the former hippodrome site, the restructured Namur - Jean-Talon area. Electricity will be used for propulsion and this firms up Quebec`s environmental goals for 2020.

The first exhibition is held at the Montreal City Hall between March 23rd and April 7th, 2010. The tour will continue to Cote des Neiges - Notre Dame de Grace, Sud Ouest and Ville Marie boroughs till the end of the year.
