Researchers at Taipei Medical University have found a definite link between the nicotine in cigarettes and breast cancer. Their findings are published in the August 23rd online version of Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Yuan-Soon Ho, Ph.D. and colleagues studied 276 breast tumor samples from anonymous donors to determine whether nicotine works on the cellular level to promote breast cancer rates. The researchers found the cells had large numbers of receptors which nicotine was able to attach to when compared with normal cells. They also found that when normal cells were treated with nicotine, it promoted the development of cancer characteristics.  This fact raises some questions as to the health risks of nicotine patches and nicotine gum.

Good article Nancy. My mother is a survivor though she did not smoke. Cigarettes are just a bad decision overall.
