The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, FDA, approved the use of female condoms in 1993, however, its use by women of this country has not been overwhelming, with roughly 1.5 percent of the female population giving it a try. That may change.
The Female Health Company, headquartered in Chicago, is the maker of the FC Female Condom (FC1 and FC2), a revolutionary option offering women dual protection against sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS, and unintended pregnancies.
A citywide effort to promote use of the female condom is being conducted in Washington, D.C., in an attempt to stop the spread of HIV in D.C., which has one of the highest rates of infection in the country. The condoms are being sold in CVS stores in the DC area, but are also available at health clinics.
The Female Health Company's Senior Strategic Advisor, Mary Ann Leeper, Ph.D., is heading the introduction of the condom in the U.S. which is the sole manufacturer.
The FC2 condom is a strong, thin and flexible sheath made of a synthetic material called nitrile approximately the same length as a male condom. It has a flexible polyurethane ring at the closed end of the sheath (the end that is inserted into the vagina).
