Reminding charter school operators that they "are public schools", U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan told charter schools that "they should be held to the same standards as everyone else."
Duncan's remarks came in the fourth of his policy initiatives series. He has spoken to NEA about the changes and support the government envisions for education, and has suggested specifically higher standards for charter schools.

Duncan praised Mastery Charters in Philadelphia, saying, the system "is a different turnaround model and we need that as well. There is so much urgency and so much need in under-performing schools that we can't impede successful models like these."
