LAUSD uses its English language learners to make money

A USC study found that nearly three out of 10 Los Angeles English-learner students spent years in English-language-instruction courses without ever being re-classified as English fluent.” Some begin the English language learning classes in the early years of elementary school and are still in the classes when they enter high school.

Many are not reclassified even though they score at proficiency level on a test that the State of California uses to determine English fluency.

“The state Legislative Analyst's Office has found that districts have a financial incentive for keeping students classified as English learners because federal and state programs distribute funds based on the number of students eligible for those programs. In other words, the more students classified as English learners the more money districts receive from Washington and Sacramento.”

Is there anyone who does not think that every LAUSD board member, every downtown administrator, and every superintendent needs to go because they are not there for the students of LAUSD?

Is there anyone who does not think that every school in the district needs to secede from the district in order to better manage the school’s need and in order to directly receive every penny earmarked for the students?

    It's not just lausd. It's the state. Years ago, a passing score on the annual Star test was enough to reclassify students. When these tests scores started to rise in the last decade, the state removed that means of reclassification and devised its own, more difficult test.

    ATTENTION- all classified employees of LAUSD- there will be a meeting at Markham Middle School on Sat. Dec.5 at 11:30am PLEASE come. call your unions,ask questions, GET INVOLVED! don't take these cuts! DEFEND OUR JOBS AND OUR PAY!

    Reclassification is based on a number of criteria which include CELDT scores, CST scores and English class grades. This combination is what makes it difficult to reclassify as English fluent. Beyond this the State and Federal government should revisit funding policies with conflicting interests.

    I totally agree.This is the problem with LAUSD. For years they refuse to hire qualified teachers to teach all students. if you knew Spanish, you got a job alone with a hugh stipent. As for as the veteran teachers who did it right by student teaching taking bias exams and completin the appropriate coarses, we were sh### out of luck.That's why, only a few of us have a "life credential" which is well deserve.I fault the district in regards to this "poor teacher evaluation". They should evaluate the administrators who allow certain teachers to get away with poor teaching habits,better known as the " pricipals club.I also fault parents in regards to the English learners because it's imperitive that they educate themselves in regards to the length of the time their child remains in the bilingual program.Prior to the stipent being cancelled, some schools kept students in the program to allow certain teachers to receive stipents.We are in America, English is the language and I fault LAUSD .
