Playstation 3 Holiday Guide: Action Adventure

Sony's latest console entry boasts hundreds of titles, and choosing the perfect one for a holiday gift isn't easy.  This Holiday Guide looks to remedy that situation with a simple breakdown of some of the best games in each genre.  But choosing the right gift isn't as easy as picking out a great game; there are other things to consider - is it age-appropriate?  Does it offer enough for a solo gamer?  Is it too difficult for younger gamers?  These considerations and more will be discussed as well, all to help you find the best gift for your gamer this Holiday season.  Today, we'll be looking at Action Adventure titles.  Batman: Arkham Asylum and inFamous are a couple of super hero games that everyone needs to check out, but Uncharted 2: Amon Thieves just might be the best game of the year, and a must own for every PS3 owner.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves: Met with much fanfare and rave reviews, Uncharted 2 delivered what is easily one of the most amazing experiences of the year and in this console generation.  Gamers will traverse gorgeous vistas, dilapidated cities, and a variety of other expansive environments, as they control Nathan Drake in his search for the mythical city of Shambhala.  Uncharted 2 offers cover-based gun fights with a bit of brutal hand-to-hand combat mixed in.  The shooting is broken up by some simple puzzles and acrobatic platforming.  In addition to a great solo campaign, developers Naughty Dog added online multiplayer in which gamers can work together in taking out waves of enemies or other playerin various 5 vs 5 game types.  Buy it for: anyone with a Playstation 3.  Seriously.  This game is that good.  Consider something else: for someone who is strongly apposed to platforming.  ESRB Rating: T for Teen.  Violent but not graphic.  Also consider: the original, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune - a cheap alternative for anyone new to the series and/or recent PS3 owners.

Batman Arkham Asylum:  Batman returns to consoles in what is considered the best comic book-based video game ever made.  Play as Batman as he attempts to survive the inmates of Akrham Asylum and put an end to the Joker's latest plan.  To do so, players will have to take advantage of all of Batman's skills: brutal, multi-enemy combat, creative gadgets, and the ability to attack from the shadows.  The game features Kevin Conroy as the voice of Batman, Mark Hamil as the Joker, and several other actors from the Batman Animated Series.  Never before have gamers had the opportunity to control a video game Batman that so closely resembles his comic book counterpart.  Buy it for: Batman fans or anyone who enjoys a good brawler.  Consider something else: for a gamer who isn't all that interested in action games that requires some patience and exploration.  ESRB Rating: T for Teen.  Violent, but not graphic.  Also consider: Assassin's Creed 2.  The game offers similar combat mechanics, acrobatics, and gadetry, though it's set a few hundred years in the past.

inFamous: This super power, open-world action adventure title gives gamers the option to use their electric-based powers for good or for evil.  A devestating explosion has nearly leveled Empire City, but it has also given Cole the powers to save or destroy what's left.  As you progress the main story, you will uncover dozens of different side-missions, all of which can and do reflect the choices you have already made.  These choices will affect how Cole's powers evolve and how the remaining citizens of the city view him.  There is a nice variety of missions here - many require players to use their electric powers to take out groups of enemies, but the acrobatic nature of travel is used well in race-like events and item hunting.  Buy it for: gamers who enjoy the freedom to choose where to go and what to do.  Consider something else: for someone who is looking for a more straightforward action game.  ESRB Rating: T for Teen.  Violent, but not graphic.  Also consider: Prototype.  Prototype has many similarities to inFamous: it's an open-world game in which you play a character with special abilities (he can turn into other people and mutate his limbs into deadly weapons), but Prototype has a much darker tone.
