Jack Herer
Contrary to previous reports, Jack Herer is still alive. The Oregonian is reporting the activist is in critical condition at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland Oregon. In addition, celebstoner has retracted their announcement of Herer's death. In light of these facts it is with pleasure the Portland Progressive Examiner retracts an earlier report of Herer's death.
Jack Herer, much beloved Emperor of Hemp and marijuana hero collapsed backstage on Saturday, September 12, at "Hempstalk 2009" in Portland, Oregon. Herer had just given a fiery speech to the crowd on the future of hemp when he suffered a heart attack and a significant loss of oxygen.
Jack Herer was born June 18, 1939. A former Goldwater Republican, Herer became a political activist and the author of The Emperor Wears No Clothes, a book which is now a classic polemic in the effort to decriminalize marijuana. Herer was perhaps the world's most famous activist for the decriminalization of marijuana and the utilization of hemp.
Herer argued for the decriminalization and utilization of marijuana because it has been shown to be a renewable source of fuel, food, and medicine, and can be grown in virtually any part of the world. Herer was one of the first to show that the U.S. government deliberately hides the proof of marijuana's efficacy and utility. Herer devoted his life in support of cannabis, hemp and marijuana.
Herer suffered a stroke and heart attack in 2000 at another Oregon event. Although he had since recovered, the 70-year-old activist spoke with a stutter and walked with a limp. Just minutes before his speech, Herer looked fit and said, "I'm getting better and better and better. I'm healthier than I've been..."
Herer is a true American hero who spoke truth to power. He stood up for freedom while many others failed to do so.

I was advised only one hour ago that Jack Herer is still alive but Jack's condition is possibly irreversible and there may be sad news shortly. However, at this time, Jack Herer is NOT dead. This article is premature and not correct.

I just learned recently of who Jack Herer was. I am truly sadden that he passed this life, but he is in a better place now. Great things happen when monumental people pass this life. His dream will live on in me (twenty-five year old). I know that we, as Americans, will see our government come back to common sense and legalize marijuana, while using money and time spent enforcing ignorant and racist marijuana laws to combat real crime.

Jack's condition has been upgraded from critical to serious. In other words he is NOT dead. Quit spreading rumors that are not based in verified fact

Your "source" regarding the status of Jack Herer is incorrect. Mr. Herer is not dead, and is still in the hospital. I am in near-constant contact with the family, and just spoke directly to one of Mr. Herer's sons who asked me to tell you "Jack's status has not changed. He is still in ICU. If and when there is any change, we will issue a statement through the proper channels." He also asked that you print a retraction immediately. Thank you.

The family is still at the hospital as of about an hour ago, or about 5:30PM (GMT -5), or about the time this article was posted, so at the moment, this is a premature report.
Everyone's life who was touched by Jack Herer is pulling for him, and for his family, as I do.
We must all remember hat Jack fought for over the last 3-4 DECADES of his life: Our freedom. Our health. Our lives.
There are those--myself included--who will feel the eventual loss of Jack deeply, because they understand this man's true contributions...but those who truly understand it all WILL take up Jack's "Fight Against Ignorance", however things turn ot for Jack, we MUST continue his legacy! We MUST continue to fight...because it's not just Jack who believed that we can save the world...many of us do...and our ranks are growing!

Ed, McGee and My friend Rev. Eddy Lepp.Cannabis is legal in California. Jack's knowledge was immeasurable. Making him laugh was an honor I will always cherish. I was a Jester to the King @ Capt Ed's 40th Anniversary BBQ and @ Howard Dover's ExtravaGANJA. Thanks for having the balls to speak out against the powers that be and changing the world.

From what I have heard he is still alive. This story shows that the media is like the grim reaper. They would much rather break the story of a death then consider the feelings of the people know and love the victim of this type of reporting.

As a friend of Jack's, I find this article to be inexcusably offensive and I hope that it gets taken down soon. I agree with Tom that you just wanted to be first and I hope the family sues you or you have sum hemperor who kick your ass for being so heartless.
I think it was a mistake. "We love you Jack" and "free the weed" doesn't sound like someone who is trying to be malevolent. Maybe this guy doesn't sit his ass at his computer all day like a lot of the people leaving comments do. Jack is in for it if the people leaving such hateful messages about this guy are the same people that are supposed to be sending Jack good energy. Get well soon Jack!
