Super Bowl deception: CBS, Tebow, Focus on the Family

Misleading advertising - Super Bowl deception: CBS, Tebow, Focus on the Family. Apparently CBS is about to run a misleading and deceptive anti-choice ad featuring Tim Tebow's mother during the Super Bowl. The spot is being paid for by the controversial Christian conservative group Focus on the Family.

The ad is based on the theme "Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life", and is said to feature Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow's mother, Pam, talking about how her "personal faith" convinced her to carry her son to term, while she and her husband were missionaries in the Philippines.

If this were the end of the story, it would be without controversy. However, the Tebows take the story further. According to the Tebows, doctors recommended that Pam Tebow abort the fetus, but she chose to go through with the pregnancy.

The claim that Tebow's doctors recommended she have an abortion has set off a firestorm of criticism and concern. The simple fact is that the draconian laws around abortion in the Phillipines makes the story quite suspicious, and the implication that Pam Tebow had anything like a choice seems very doubtful.

Powerhouse attorney Gloria Allred has been one of many to express profound concern at the CBS network's decision to allow this apparently deceptive and misleading pro life ad to air during the upcoming Super Bowl:

Allred says she believes it an impossible scenario to believe that Philippino doctors would of ever suggested abortion as a viable option for Tebow in the first place. And when you learn that physicians and midwives who perform abortions in the Philippines face six years in prison, and may have their licenses suspended or revoked, and that women who receive abortions - no matter the reason - may be punished with imprisonment for two to six years, it's easy to see why.

The Tebow's pretend that Pam Tebow had a choice, that she had access to a safe, legal abortion. This is simply not the case. Tebow could have faced prison, while her doctor(s) would have faced prison and the loss of license.

Going against medical advice and not terminating the pregnancy made the story a self-righteous, Christian melodrama, red meat for the anti-choice rabble. In reality the story was nothing but a deceptive, misleading and ill conceived morality play orchestrated by moral midgets demanding mandatory motherhood while pushing a misogynistic agenda that would deny a woman's right to control her own reproductive health.

The fact that the story is a deception should be no surprise. Christianity is built on deception. Indeed, self deception would seem to be a necessary ingredient of religious faith.

Yet putting such metaphysical assertions aside, the question remains: Will CBS run a deceptive and misleading ad sponsored by the Christian hate group Focus on the Family to promote a questionable and controversial political stance during Super Bowl XLIV?

People who say they are "Pro Choice" ought to be better prepared to receive a story of when a woman exercises that choice towards preserving life. Otherwise, their political stand could be renamed "Pro Abortion". Of course, Pam Tebow had the option for an abortion, an American is free to travel to maybe Hawaii or Guam? Hey, too bad not China; there she would only have to say that she has more than two children. The Chinese government is more overt than the American Government whose 'Pro Choice' advocates call abortion "Health Care".

All your attacks on Mrs. Tebow being a liar falls apart for one big reason: Allred and fellow abortionists are all liars to claim Philippines does not allow abortion even in the case of the mother's life in danger:

    www.asap-asia.org/country-profile-philippines.html

although the Penal Code does not list specific exceptions to the general prohibition on abortion, under the general criminal law principles of necessity as set forth in article 11(4) of the Code, an abortion may be legally performed to save the pregnant woman’s life.2 A decision of the Supreme Court also impliedly recognized abortion to save the mother’s life.3 The United Nations recognizes that abortion in the Philippines is permitted only in instances in which the pregnant woman's life is endangered.4

"Truth" and "Delilah" are indeed accurate and on the case. Absent information to the contrary, we, and that includes Michael Stone, can only speculate on what the truth is and thus make conclusions/judgments, like " . . . Will CBS run a deceptive and misleading ad sponsored by the Christian hate group Focus on the Family to promote a questionable and controversial political stance during Super Bowl XLIV?"

While Michael's column is entertaining, polemic, and divisive (and so-intended), it doesn't get us any closer to a responsible, informed, or even sophisticated dialog. As we say in talk radio, and that's what I do, " . . . when all is said and done, there is more said than done." The variation on the talk radio cliche is about heat-and-light, as in rhetoric vs. enlightenment, the whole basis for AM talk radio.

You realize that our discussion is a gift for both sides, as we're stirring the pot, turning up the heat, as the spin-meisters, like Michael, are enjoying every word?

A little perspective on abortions being illegal in the Philippines--there is a disconnect between what is illegal on paper and what happens in practice. In America where it is legal, the abortion rate is 19% whereas in the Philippines, it is estimated to be about 15%--in spite of all the restrictions, social controls, and disapproval. This says a lot about the effectiveness of abortion laws which really just lead to disparities in health care by class. In the Philippines, relatively wealthier women get to have safe abortions in the care of personal physicians while poorer women use street vendors and drugs purchased on the black market. The latter group have illegal abortions on their own and then come in to hospitals for post-abortion surgeries--assuming they can get there in time (800 are estimated to die each year from this). See the Guttmacher Institute and search on PhilippinesUPIA.pdf

Hey Truth, funny you should bring up slavery. Read a little history yourself, THE BIBLE that you people always bring up in these issues was used in Southern Churches to Justify Slavery!!!! It has ( as has religion ) been used for many heinous things for centuries!!! Wars, The Dark ages ( when the Catholic Church murdered many many people whom didn't follow their teachings), Witch hunts in Massachusetts, gay bashing the list goes on and on!!! And how many times have we "caught " Right wingers in immorral acts!!! The Biblr was written by humans Not God, they put there own ideas in this book, I suspect most of them were right wingers. It was also translated over and over. Anyone that knows multiple languages will tell you that many times when doing this translation process that there is no direct translation from language to language, this leaves the interpitation up to the Opinion of the translator. Rational,

First off your history is off on several points. The persecutions of religious dissent you spoke of by the church did not take place during the dark ages but during the Middle Ages and the Reformation periods. The dark ages was a period limited to a few centuries immnediately right after the fall of Rome in finality in 476 AD til the times of Charlemagne. The Middle Ages covered a span of from 500 to 1400-1500.

Secondly, it was the clergy that put a stop to the Salem witch trials, on grounds they felt the trial was unbiblical especially on denying people's rights to due process, under the law, given in the Mass. Body of Liberties.

Thirdly, the fact the Southern churches used the Bible to justify slavery does not change the fact that abolitionists were indeed accused of trying to impose their own brand of Christianity and morality on the slaveowners.

And fourthly, I got a BA in History.

  • Truth 2 years ago

The real leaders of the abolitionist movement were the free thinkers; they were the first to condemn slavery in the US.

While many millions were killed as the result of communist totalitarianism, this was always a political movement, not a religious movement.
