There is madness in Texas, as a small minority advocates for sovereignty or secession. In a severe case of right wing nut fever, members of the of the Texas Nationalist Movement called on the governor and the Legislature to put a referendum on the state ballot on whether Texas should leave the union.
The “Sovereignty or Secession” rally at the state Capitol was a veritable redneck freak show, with upwards of 200 people attending the rally. The organizer of the event, Daniel Miller, a leader of the Texas Nationalist Movement said that he and his fellow secessionists were disappointed that Texas Governor Rick Perry didn’t attend the rally.
At an anti-tax "tea party" protest in April, Governor Rick Perry touted states rights and raised the possibility of secession. Speaking to reporters in April Perry said: “There’s absolutely no reason to dissolve [the Union]. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that".
Speakers at the rally included Larry Kilgore, a Christian activist and candidate for governor who has endorsed executions for homosexuals; Debra Medina, a Ron Paul Republican and a slightly-less long-shot candidate for governor; and Melissa Pehle-Hill, yet another fringe candidate and a member of a self-appointed “citizens grand jury” investigating Barack Hussein Obama, aka Barry Soetoro.
Kilgore, the Christian activist, said: “I hate that flag up there,” pointing to the American flag flying over the Capitol. “I hate the United States government. … They’re an evil, corrupt government. They need to go. Sovereignty is not good enough. Secession is what we need!”
While the Ron Paul wing nut Medina chipped in: “We are aware that stepping off into secession may in fact be a bloody war. We are aware that the tree of freedom is occasionally watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots.”
It is at once both humorous and an ugly reminder of depravity deep in the heart of Texas.

Hey Mikey how can you condemn someone as racist for saying "Great White Hope", and then turn around in a later blog and spew racist quotes like "a veritable redneck freak show," sounds hypocritical to me Stoner. I thought you were against racism Mikey, yet you seem to be racist towards whites, which is rather odd considering you look white judging by your photo.
Hey Sack Pack,
Last time I checked rednecks were not a race. You might want to educate yourself little friend. Is English your second language?
Showing a tea-bagger an African-America president is like showing fire to Frankensteins Monster. Its about racism, plain and simple. What's it been? Less than 8 months out of power and already the frothing-at-the-mouth, knuckle-dragging, slack-jawed, racist, authoritarian, theocratic bullies of the Republithug party are waiving their pitchforks for armed rebellion and secession?! Yet they call the progressive majority un-American?! Now thats the height of illogical lunacy! It would be funny if they werent so damn dangerous. The Republithugs will be banished forever as a party if the neo-Nazi, KKK, militia types theyre now pandering to commit any act of domestic terrorism or attempted assassination. It would be good to see them go, but the thought of any harm coming to our progressive elected leaders frightens the daylights out of me. We all need to send good Karma and/or pray, if thats your thing, for this time of rightwing intimidation to pass without violence.
I agree Kilgore is a nutjob. Nice guy, but a nutjob. I don't think your characterization of Medina as a wingnut is warranted though. If you listen to her whole speech, her emphasis is on nullification and interposition. If all of that fails, and that's a long process, then we can talk about secession. If you don't believe the people have a right to hold their government accountable to the Constitution, perhaps you have a problem with the people seeking to redress their grievances.
Your comment to Sack Pack was blantantly racist. "you need to educate yourself little friend is English your second language" is a typical slur directed towards our hispnic immigrants who are not fortunate enough to be highly educated like Mikey is.
Mikey, thanks for bringing this threat to our attention. Do you have any idea how many nuclear weapons there are in Texas? Lots of them. They also have a fleet of B-1B bombers. So many people in Texas have never gotten over the Great War of Northern Aggression, to add to the overall danger, so many of their neighboring states still have to same wounds and would no doubt join the Texas depravity.
"Joe B" sounds like a total dweeb who probably plays all those role playing libtard games like Dungeons and Dragons in his mom's basement.
I see Mikey mentioned Ron Paul in this article, any chance of you doing another article on Ron Paul Mikey.
Mikey, can you point out anywhere in the law or Constitution that prohibits any state from secession?
Joe B. sounds like a Huffpo bot who is ONLY parroting the FAR FAR left word games. NOTHING of substance.
Any article that starts spewing "nutjob", "redneck", "wingnut", etc. is not any form of journalism but, clearly just a hit piece at best. These are Americans who have a right under the first ammendment (if anyone even still understands it) to speak their minds. It may be extreme but, given how the federal government has been so over reaching for the past few years. Their viewpoint is becoming less radical and more sensible. I'm still on the fence with the examiner as a whole. I've seen good articles and then articles like this that are just full of hate and malice.
Hello Michael. Your liberal use of very unkind adjectives is not professional journalism. You are attempting to portray citizens with a different point of view as inferior to your own delusion that you are enlightened. This is shameful. Also, any generalization of all those attending as a "nut" is disrespectful and bigotry - not something most of nuts in Texas consider enlightened.
Stoner, I feel people would take your writing more seriously without all the racial slurs, bigotry, and name calling. As others commenters have stated it's certainly not credible journalism and doesn't add much credence to your work.
Peace
Mr. Stone, I lived in Texas for almost 10 years. This is my observation of that state: I was in the "bible belt" where the churches were big parts of the communities. That influence brought a level of orderliness that you don't see in other places. We didn't see the kind of crap that your mayor imposed on Portland, the community paid little attention to anyone who wanted to preach the virtues of marijuana.
There are fringe groups everywhere that want to exercise thier constitutional right to free speech and Texas is no exception.
Don't go on about 'depravity' deep in the heart of Texas, and above all else DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS
Hi Kids,
Thanks for reading.
"Redneck"is not a race, it is a state of mind.
I do not pretend to write objective news; I make it clear I write commentary; I have a definite bias to the left, hence my title.
Any Bible thumper who claims he "hates the United States" and that "the United States is evil" deserves only contempt and scorn. I am surprised anyone would defend such an ass.
Joe B. sets an excellent example for everyone. He offers an intelligent observation that the rest of you might want to note, and attempt to emulate.
Again, I appreciate everyone reading and responding.
peace

Do you scorn such haters as the man who married the Obamas and Baptized his children and acted as his spiritual adviser until he was thrown under the bus for political reasons?
Oh, and Joe B is a pile too! Nothing of substance, it is no wonder you praise him.
Mikey just what in the hell is your major malfunction son, every time I turn around your stirring the pot with race baiting and what-not. Nobody here wants to emulate a brainwashed libturd like Joe B., except maybe another lib-bot. Would like to hear your answer to "Daves not here man..." question regarding good ole Reverend Jeremiah Wright, if you're not to busy there Mikey. Also will there be any more articles pertaining to the "Free the Weed" movement, me and Sgt.Major Jenkins always get a big kick out of those?
Mr. Stone, I missed meeting you at the rally. Did you attend?
Perhaps you were one of the people moveon.org bussed in from Dallas and paid $15 an hour to heckle the event?
The funny thing about the reaction to left-wingers all over the country to this is the fact that we have been at this for YEARS, not just since Obama was elected. I joined in 2006 because I was opposed to what the Republicans were doing to our individual freedoms. I'm the guy who exposed Bush's education agenda as a fraud back in 1994 -- where were you then?
Get your facts straight, otherwise get out of the journalism business.
WOW! You really didn't do any research did you? You state that Debra "Medina chipped in," but you take it entirely out of context. She was actually warning AGAINST secession. Watch the entire speech she gave and see if she's really what you portray her as above.
