Progressive politics: Senate moves against "Don't Ask Don't Tell". Today a group of senators introduced a bill to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT), a policy that bans gays and lesbians from serving openly in the U.S. military, and discharges troops who are outed as gay or lesbian.
The failed DADT policy reflects a bigotry that is simply no longer tolerable in contemporary society. Openly gay and lesbian troops deserve the right to serve their country with pride and distinction.
Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., along with senate colleagues Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., Sen. Roland Burris, D-Ill. and Sen. Kristin Gillibrand, D-N.Y., held a news conference on Capitol Hill today to introduce the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, a bill that if passed will repeal the military's ban on gays.
Gays and lesbians are valuable members of the military. The US military should honor principles like honesty and integrity. Forcing members of the armed forces to lie about their sexual orientation compromises those principles.
Polls show that between 60-75 percent of the country supports ending the ban on openly gay and lesbian troops. Moreover, senior leaders in the U.S. military, including Adm. Mike Mullen, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Gen. Colin Powell, the former Secretary of State, have called for an end to DADT.
Any problem with repeal of DADT is largely generational. For the most part, young adults simply do not share the irrational homophobia of many older Americans.
As one might expect, Oregon is out in front on this progressive cause. Oregon Senator Ron Wyden was present at the press conference, lending his support for the bill. In addition, Senator Jeff Merkley, also of Oregon, has pledged his support for the bill.

Yes, lets all encourage deviant behavior and celibrate diversity. In ten years we'll have domestic sheep as dependents and pedo's as social workers. Leftists are so pro-science, and yet it was not until 40 years ago Homosexuality was considered a mental illness. That is what is so great about the science. If you don't like the results, either change them or create a counter hypothosy, and in a few generations everyone forgets the facts.
