Senator Harry Reid supports a public option; Senator Joe Lieberman does not. In a refreshing show of courage and leadership, Senate Majority Leader Reid, Democrat, has declared his intent for a public option to be part of health care reform. After Reid's announcement, once Democrat, now Independent, Senator Joe Lieberman, announced that he would join a planned Republican filibuster of any health care reform legislation including a public option.
Senator Reid is to be congratulated for standing up for what is right. Lieberman, on the other hand, is threatening to block the most important legislation of our generation. Democrats should not tolerate Lieberman's dissent. For the moment Lieberman enjoys an uneasy alliance with Democrats. However, Democrats need to be clear with Lieberman that siding with Republicans on health care reform will be political suicide. And if need be, Democrats need to follow through on their threat.
This same sort of "hard ball" approach needs to be taken with so called "blue dog" democrats, who continue to waffle on health care reform. Those who oppose health care reform need to be threatened with political obliteration. That means finding Democrats to oppose them in their respective primaries, and denying them any national support in general elections.
Health care reform is a litmus test for Democrats. If you do not support a public option, you should not be welcome in the Democratic leadership. Some things are negotiable. Health care reform, and a public option, should not be one of those things.

I see the story the EXACT opposite. Lieberman is going with his constituents and his own better judgment over political party.

The most important civil liberty issue of our day is health care. A public option will liberate millions of Americans from the evils of the health insurance industry. A public option will force health insurance companies to play fair with the American people.

Sure, you trash "corporate America", but what about the trial lawyers making buckets of money and driving up the cost of health care because doctors now have to order many more tests to keep from losing law suits? As a small business owner I know what it is like to have to deal with the government. I can guarantee you that you aren't going to like what will happen if this public option thing becomes a reality. Are you going to come and defend my civil liberties, or the civil liberties of my employees when we all find ourselves out of jobs? Please remember "the government can't give anything to anybody without taking it away from someone else first."
