Oregon Cannabis Tax Act 2010

Get ready Oregon, the movement to put the Oregon Cannabis Tax Act on the ballot in 2010 is gearing up. The Oregon Cannabis Tax Act is being sponsored by the Campaign for the Restoration and Regulation of Hemp (CRRH), a group dedicated to educate people about the medicinal and industrial uses for cannabis in our global society in order to restore hemp cultivation and end adult cannabis prohibition.

According to their website:

The group has recently revised and refiled the Oregon Cannabis Tax Act of 2010 (OCTA) petition and are in the process of gathering 1,000 sponsorship signatures. After this first step, the group will be given an official ballot title from the state. After polling, the group will begin circulating the petition across Oregon. They will need 100,000 valid signatures by July, 2, 2010 to qualify for the November 2010 election. In order to be successful, this mission will require key assistance from volunteers across Oregon.

The Oregon Cannabis Tax Act will do the following:

Protect children! This is the real “Protect Our Children” initiative. The Cannabis Tax Act (CTA) will take the lucrative marijuana market out of the black market where children and substance abusers often control it today, and place it in adult only stores, where the age limit of 21 and older is strictly enforced.

Help farmers! We will license farmers to cultivate cannabis for both medicinal and adult private use. Farmers will be able to grow industrial hemp without a license, for paper, fabric, protein and oil.

Allow doctors to prescribe untaxed cannabis through pharmacies, so patients won’t have to grow their own or buy medicine illegally.

Raise millions of dollars in new public revenue, lowering the tax burden on all and saving you money. Take the profit out of crime.

Restore industrial hemp, the most productive agricultural source of fiber protein and oil. Hemp seed oil is diesel fuel. The first cordage, cloth and paper were invented from hemp fiber.

Wipe out the black-market. The CTA allows police and the courts to concentrate on real criminals that hurt others, not arrest, prosecute and jail harmless, productive adult cannabis users. Stop our government from tearing families apart. Let’s show real family values and end cannabis prohibition.

Oregonians have already benefited from cannabis by receiving $900,000 from the self funding Oregon Medical Marijuana Program into the state general fund. Replacing prohibition with a system of taxation and regulation will produce combined savings and tax revenues of an estimated $300 million per year.

Let’s take the profits away from drug cartels and use it to support our state’s economy and social programs. Let’s stop our government from tearing families apart with senseless arrests and prosecution. Let’s show real family values and positive change for our environment by ending cannabis prohibition in all its forms.

Marijuana prohibition must come to an end. Please sign the petition once it is available. Better yet, volunteer to help the movement. Together we can Free the Weed!

    Loved how you managed to link this movement up to helping out the children, the environment, and of course good old family values. Oh, and helping the environment. You got all the good buzz words in there.
    Now when this things fall fat on its face we'll hear about the mean old Republicans, Rush Limbaugh, George Bush and the tea baggers.

    The question on American's minds on this day of August 8, 2009, is which is more of a lame duck, the "Free the Weed" campaign or obamacare? Fair and Balanced, You Decide.

    If alcohol prohibition failed, why does anyone think marijuana prohibition will succeed?

    Whereas the people of the State of Oregon find that Cannabis hemp is an environmentally beneficial crop that:

    (a) Yields several times more fiber, for paper and textiles, than any other plant;

    (b) Yields cloth and paper of superior strength and durability without the application of pesticides during cultivation and without producing cancer-causing pollutants during processing;

    (c) Yields more seed oil and protein, for prodigious and ecological biodiesel fuel, plastics and nutritious food, than any other plant;

    (d) Yields more biomass than any other plant outside the tropics, though it grows well in the tropics too, and grows faster than any other plant on earth in the temperate and cooler climates;

    (e) Yields a substance that relieves the suffering of many ill people without life-threatening side effects; and,

    Oregon has a chance to be among the first to stop putting our citizens in prison for seeking pain relief they can find no other way. Many of those who have disrupting the Townhall meetings complain that they don't want the Gov. controlling their healthcare and yet they are alway those who scream someone should do 10 yrs in prison for growing and smoking medicinal marijuana. The hypocrisy is blinding.
    I can hear them now, screaming that they don't want their tax dollars being spent to get someone high because that drug addicted, pill popping, percocet fiend, Rush Limbuagh tells them it will lead to millions staying home from work to collect welfare and smoke dope. As most sane people realize Rushs brand of dishonest spin is worse for our democracy than the legalization of marijuana. His promotion of violence is something never heard from Medical Marijuana activists. MMJ activists aim to reverse the years of racism hidden behind the prohibition of marijuana. Rushs aim revive racism.

    Too bad that hemp doesn't grow well in Oregon and if you did produce a crop, there is no place to take it in order to get it processed.

    I read the OCTA. Good Lord, what a load of hippie dippie bullcrap. I'm all for legalizing marijuana, but who wrote that thing? The "Whereas" crap goes on forever and some of it just plain false. Ninety nine percent of it is unnecessary and unhelpful. And then they set it up so the government is the one selling the pot and put all these restrictions on how the money is to be spent. Why not have just a nice short and sweet legalization initiative? Why have the government sell it and not private entities like we see with alcohol? As much as I want marijuana legalized I'd have a real hard time voting for this dog. We need initiatives put together by people who know how to put together initiatives designed to win. This one looks like it was put together by a bunch of Jack Herer worshipping rebels without a clue sitting around a bong, clutching their copies of the Emperor Wears No Clothes to their hearts. It's a joke with absolutely no chance of passing.
