Does Glenn Beck threaten the reputation of Mount Vernon, Washington? Eye brows are raised and questions are being asked about the wisdom of Mount Vernon's Mayor offering the controversial and outrageous media personality keys to the city. Reports are that many are angry about the ill conceived venture. The controversy is building, as talks of boycotts and protests begin to plague the sleepy town.
Mayor Bud Norris is proclaiming "Glenn Beck Day" and giving him a key to the city. Radio and TV show host Glenn Beck will be celebrated on Sept. 26 in Mount Vernon, where he grew up. Norris said Beck will deliver a short talk that night and become the first person to receive a key to the city in the six years Norris has been mayor.
Norris rationalizes his embarrassing gaff by claiming that because Beck is now (in)famous, he deserves recognition. One is left to wonder, what exactly is the Mayor's criteria for such an award? Is anyone, no matter how vile or repugnant, no matter how toxic to civil discourse, eligible for keys to the city, as long as they have achieved some modicum of fame?
Many are urging Mayor Norris to rescind the offer in order to protect the city from the backlash that will accompany Beck's appearance. Protests, as well as email and telephone campaigns have already begun. Dozens of protesters carried signs and chanted last week outside City Hall. The protests were organized in part by the Young Democrats of Skagit County.
Glenn Beck's program airing on Fox News is already the subject of a successful major boycott. Beck is symptomatic of a larger problem: how does a civil society treat the intolerant. Beck is, by many accounts, a hate monger who borders on insanity. Beck preaches a thinly disguised hate to our nation's most ignorant and gullible. Good people are left puzzled; how do we handle such a vile, toxic monster, while respecting the first amendment.
One thing is certain: Giving Beck the keys to the city is a major failure given Beck's hatred and intolerance. It is a failure in leadership that threatens the reputation of Mount Vernon Washington.

Speaking of "ignorant and gullible" I saw a video on FOX NEWS CHANNEL'S highly rated Glenn Beck Program of 3 hippie freaks standing on the street boycotting Beck's receiving a key to the city of Mount Vernon, Wash., which is Beck's hometown. The 3 count'em people, 3 commie hippies plus 1 camera man were standing on the street with libtarded signs and were totally ignored by everyone that passed. These freaks looked to be in their late teens or early-twenties at the oldest and appeared to be jobless as usual, no surprise there huh.

I knew there were a lot of stupid crackers in the Skagit Valley, but I figured most of them were based in Sedro Wolley. Many of us in Seattle will be boycotting the so-called "tulip festival" this year. Hopefully the community will feel the economic pinch and get themselves an education. Just one question: Did Sarah Palin visit your mall for her "book" signing? I can't think of a better location in Western Washington for a moron like that!
