Bigotry trumps compassion; Maine rejects gay marriage. In a shameful display of ignorance, bigotry and hate, Maine has rejected compassion, fairness, and moral decency by rejecting gay marriage. The defeat of gay marriage is deeply disappointing and a profound commentary on the power of religious ignorance and superstition in the 21st century.
Civil rights, human rights, gay rights, should not be put up for a vote. The minority must be protected from the tyranny of the majority. It is time to put away the hatred and bigotry. The discrimination has gone on too long. Our religious institutions are largely to blame, for it is from these institutions the bigotry and hatred comes.
Gay rights are civil rights; gay rights are human rights. Discrimination is always wrong. In the future, those who oppose gay marriage now, will appear as ignorant, mean and foolish as those who opposed interracial marriage fifty years ago.
Make no mistake, if you oppose gay marriage you stand on the side of ignorance and hate; you stand in darkness and shame.
The fight will continue. Justice will prevail.

Having lived in Maine for a few years, my suspicion is that a bunch of people who were initially in favor of the gay marriage thing, found out later that it did not enable them to marry their sisters and cousins, so they voted against it.

The new gay rights law was being rejected in all the counties in Eastern Washington - as well as Pierce County. It was passing in 10 Western Washington counties, including King and Snohomish. King County voters were approving the law 66 percent to 34 percent.

Gunnery - Mikey is not bigoted against Christians and western culture - do you see him promoting taking away constitutionally enshrined rigths from Christians? No. All he is saying is that it is bigoted to take away rights from a minority group, and that much of the misinformation is coming from religious organizations.
Taking constitutionally enshrined rights away from a minority group flies in the face of true democracy. The United States promotes itself around the world as being a protector of human rights. This is not something that can just be taken away by the majority. What if the majority suddenly decided that it was ok to take black slaves again? Could you put that to a referendum and ignore the constitution and impose it on a minority group? Cause that's exactly what Maine just did.
Your grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be ashamed of you when this so called "debate" finally becomes a sad memory in US history, just like slavery and inter-racial marriage.

I say that gay and straight liberals need to put their money where their mouth is - all cards on the table. Enough of this incrementalism. If they say that they are against discrimination on gay marriage and interracial marriage, then let them say, too, that they are against discrimination on polygamous marriage. They need to do it now. But they don't want to do too much too soon. That's why liberals only push the envelope a little at a time.
Redefining the institution of marriage is redefining it. Some forms of redefining it may be different than others, but it is still redefining it. Gay marriage is a redefining of marriage away from being between one man and one woman to a new form, and polygamous marriage is a redefining of marriage to a new form.
Liberal's aay that are in favor of alternate lifestyles. Gay marriage and polygamous marriage are both alternative lifestyles. How can they be for one and not the other?
In closing, there is a FAR greater historical and cultural precedent for polygamous marriage than there is for gay marriage. If gay and straight liberals are for redefining the institution of marriage for gays but not polygamists, then they are bigoted against polygamous marriage and are hypocrites to boot.

If the law were to say that a homosexual civil union is - in all aspects - the same as a heterosexual marriage, then why wouldn't that be a legitimate compromise? I have no qualms with homosexual couples who seek the the same legal rights and protections as married heterosexual couples. But why the fight over semantics? It's true that the majority of heterosexuals don't define themselves by their sexual orientation. This is significantly different than being defined by race and gender. And since it is a natural response for most heterosexuals to be confused by the homosexual community's desire to be defined by a heterosexual institution, it's difficult to define that desire as a civil right. Again, I do not oppose a homosexual civil union that are, in all other aspects, the same as a heterosexual marriage. I simply oppose the use of the term "marriage" to define a homosexual union.
