Planned Parenthood warns about Sen. Hatch attack against universal health care.

One of the horrible aspects of the current health care debate is that pro life factions want to make sure that universal health care doesn't include abortion rights for women. I'm trying to get the logic of that. You deprive milliions of women of life saving health care services because you're....pro life?

Planned Parenthood sums up the argument against Sen. Orrin Hatch.

We've been deeply concerned that women would be the first targets in health care reform and now it's happened. Yesterday, anti-choice Senator Orrin Hatch launched an attack on Planned Parenthood and the U.S. senators who were trying to help women.

Earlier this week, Senator Mikulski of Maryland, joined by four other senators, offered an amendment to make sure that preventive care for women — like birth control and cancer screenings — is included in health care legislation. The amendment also made sure women and their families can still see the doctors and nurses they trust.

The amendment passed, and it was a strong victory for women's health. And now the other side is trying their best to take it away

Within hours, Senator Hatch and his allies started spreading lies. Their aim: to cut millions of women — and Planned Parenthood — out of health care reform. Their method: to mislead the media and Americans about what the amendment actually does. Instead of telling the truth, he claimed that it mandates abortion coverage in an attempt to drum up opposition. This is an outright lie — and we need your help to fight back.

Senator Hatch and his allies have made themselves clear. They believe that providing trusted and essential health care to millions of Americans is less important than pushing their anti-choice ideology.

They are wrong. Women's health matters — it matters to me and I know it matters to you. Let's show him just how wrong he is — take a moment right now to sign a petition to Senator Hatch.

It is truly outrageous. Senator Hatch and his anti-women's health allies are willing to sacrifice the health care of so many women, men, and families for one reason — to undermine women's ability to get preventive and primary reproductive health care.

The fact is that without genuine access to care, women's health is in jeopardy. You and I know that, and that's why we won't accept health care reform that cuts out reproductive health care and women's health providers like Planned Parenthood. Please, sign your name and make sure Senator Hatch gets the message.

This isn't the first attack on women's health and Planned Parenthood since the health care reform debate began — and you can bet it won't be the last. Thank you for standing strong with us today, and please bear with us as we communicate with you frequently on this critical struggle.

Sincerely,

Cecile Richards, President
Planned Parenthood Federation of America

 Update for SK Johnson:

Well, national health care probably wouldn't make abortion illegal! You'll have legal and safe abortions either way. I would think that you would want your mothers and daughters and sisters to have affordable health care no matter what choice they make...I think its a false choice that Hatch and some so called dem "pro lifers" are making. It's almost silly.

Since when is abortion 'life saving' for anyone? Only 1% of the time is it actually saving a woman's life.

P.S. What's so condemning about Senator Hatch being against 'providing trusted healthcare to millions' to spread his 'ideology' when his ideology includes the belief that abortion is a moral evil that kills. If you had a choice between healthcare for millions and murder, what would you choose? I'm not saying you have to agree with him, but that's where he's coming from, and even if he's wrong there's nothing inherently evil about that.

Health care reform to include a public option should compete with private insurance in health care, period. If private insurance provides for abortion and birth control, so should a public option. Government monies ALREADY indirectly fund abortions paid by private insurance simply by allowing companies not to pay taxes on dollars they spend to provide insurance to their employees. A public option should not fall under some weird "separate but equal" restriction. Frankly, for those who believe absolutely that abortion is murder, those arguments should be taken up with the legislative branch to CHANGE THE LAW!

One more thing. A primary conservative argument against a public option has been that government should not get in between a patient and their doctor. Mr. Hatch's abortion amendment flies in direct opposition to that argument. Politics as usual.

    What does this mean?

"You deprive milliions of women of life saving health care services because you're....pro life?

It is quite simple really, people who are pro-life (or as you like to childishly call us "anti-choice") are morally against abortions! So, why would they want to pay money to have these procedures done, when roughly 99.97% of the cases have nothing to do with either the women's health, being raped, or incest. So stop skewing the facts!
