Much is being made with the election of Barack Obama over how lovey-dovey the First Couple is with each other. One blogger even claims that their touchy-feely attitude is good for everybody’s mood. I certainly can’t argue with that reasoning. On the other hand, I believe America is doubly blessed by the choice of Jill and Joe Biden as Second Lady and Gentleman. For an older couple who’ve been married for over three decades, the Second Couple seem to be just as cuddly as the Boss and his Missus.

The Bidens and Obamas wave a final Washington goodbye to the Bushes
And just as great for us ladies, there’s now a lot more yummy eye candy at the top as well! I always thought Joe Biden looked a bit like the late English actor Stewart Granger. Even at 65 and without some of his white hair, he’s still very easy on the eyes. And now that he’s in the next-to-the-top job, we can ogle all we want and call it our patriotic duty. And, hey, all you guys can enjoy the nice view of the two beautiful top ladies too.
That’s another great thing about both men: They’re married to ("drop-dead gorgeous") women with multiple degrees and important careers, and both men are enormously proud of their wives. As a feminist, I confess that I regret that both women resigned their full-time back-home jobs to dedicate the next four (or more?!) years to their husbands’ career paths. But their unique positions as Mmes. Number One and Number Two give them an opportunity to do even more good than they could in their previous gigs. Besides, Jill Biden is now teaching ESL part-time at Northern Virginia Community College, so she’s still professoring, at least for now.
One more point getting attention is the fact that comedians have to work harder to find something funny to say about President Obama. The biggest joke, according to more than one funnyman: The guy is faithful to his wife, they’re affectionate in public, he’s sober, intelligent, articulate, serious, competent--thanks a lot, voters!
On the other hand, there is hope for the comically-inclined: Despite 36 years as a senator, critical expertise in foreign relations, and lots more arrows in his quiver, Joe Biden can often drop a gaffe that gets played and replayed ad nauseam, everywhere from CNN to YouTube. So, don’t despair. Politics will continue to provide quality entertainment, even in the worst of circumstances. In fact, those are often the best circumstances in which we, the people, can realize that goal.
