Fatal shootings reported at Fort Hood Texas

Update as of 8:15 PM CT: At a late evening news conference held in Killeen, Texas, by General Bob Cone, the Commander of Fort Hood, Texas, the General stated that Major Malik Nadal Hasan was not killed in the gunfire exchange as previously believed. Per General Cone, Major Hasan was severly wounded and is currently in custody at a undisclosed hospital. General Cone has stated that it is still believed that Major Hasan was the primary shooter. As investigators probe the incident, more information will be provided.

Breaking news: At 1:30 CT at least one gunmen opened fire on a crowd of soldiers and civilians at a processing facility at Fort Hood, Texas, killing 12 and wounding at least 31. 

The Soldier Readiness Center is a facility that processes soldiers for deployment for overseas duty. 

Today, Fort Hood, Texas is currently on lock down.  Fort Hood is an Army base located in central Texas, in the town of Killeen, which is approximately 50 miles southwest of Waco, Texas.

After the dust settled and military and civilan police were able to control the situation, two suspects were apprehended and one shooter was killed on the scene.

The two apprehended suspects are soldiers stationed at Fort Hood.  According to news reports, the one gunman killed was a U.S. Army officer who held the rank of Major . Additionally, it is being reported that the major has an Arabic sounding name. 

Update:  The Major's name is Malik Nadal Hasan. It is believed that the 39 year old Major was the primary shooter.  Major Hasan was an Army psychiatrist who was recently promoted to the rank of Major. He recently was assigned to Fort Hood's Darnell Army Hospital.  Hasan specialized in traumatic stress.  Major Hasan was scheduled for deployment to Iraq and prior to coming to Fort Hood, Major Hasan was stationed at the Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Major Hasan was born in Virginia, and attended graduate school at Virginia Tech.

It is believed that Major Hasan used two hand guns to commit the assault.  A civilian police officer who was at the scene of the crime is accredited with killing the Major. 

Fort Hood, Texas, the largest Army base in the free world, is currently on lock down as members of the Fort Hood, Texas Army SWAT sweep across the base in an effort to secure the base and protect the lives of soldiers and civilians.

The motive for this crime is currently unknown.
