US warplanes attacked two bases in Yemen, which were thought to be Al Qaeda bases. One of them was north of the Yemeni capitol, Sanaa. The other, at an undisclosed location, was plotting an attack against "US assets", according to the US government.
The United States originally denied involvement, and Obama placed a congratulatory call to President Ali Abdallah Salih of Yemen, praising him for a job well done.
The attackers used cruise missiles.
American officials claim that 35 "terrorists" were killed. Witnesses said that "dozens" of civilians also died.
American spokespersons said the orders came directly from the Oval Office.
