Inside the Madoff scandal: Markopolos says 'Third Party' needed in politics (13 of 13)

While Harry Markopolos and I were getting acquainted as I set up my tape recorder for the interview, I admitted to him that I had never voted for a winning Presidential candidate in my life. Harry replied that while he favored alternative candidates as well, he had voted for Barack Obama.

No party loyalist, Markopolos volunteered voting for Ralph Nader "once or twice" and "a couple of times for that guy from Texas" [Ross Perot].

Sounding much like a non-partisan candidate and with folks urging him to public office, including vocal supporters in hometown Erie, Pennsylvania, I decided to get the lowdown on any future bid for office.

"No! Definitely no. Washington has ruined far better men than me, I think my sense of ethics would hold me back."

"I have a family to support."

"Washington is not my type of town. I am apolitical. I'm independent."

"Truth be told, I've lost confidence in both major parties. I'm hoping that a third party would form."

If there is going to be a Third Party, maybe Harry would be a part of it?

"I'm definitely not in the running for any public office. I know I have been approached already, and have said no and will continue to say no. It is not in my future."

"I'm apolitical. I support all third party candidates. I think they have a voice that needs to be heard, I wish America would listen to voices outside the two major parties. I think it is time for change."

"We've had Democratic and Republican parties in existence for well over a century each and maybe its time for something new, something different. It is time to embody a party that really reflects America's core values."

"I'm independent, I'm not registered with either major party."

The interview was drawing to a close and Harry was making it pretty clear he was fed up with politics as usual and had no interest in entering into the public fray.

"I'm apolitical. I'm a registered independent voter. I vote independently."

"I don't want to comment on anything having to do with the two major parties."

We don't need a new political party. We need national ballot initiatives. There is a proposal at h-t-t-p ni4d (dot) us to introduce deliberative direct democracy at the federal level. Check it out.
