Why is Matt Morgan poor in the ring?

TNA Question 10; I’ve posted 20 questions on WWE, TNA and the Indies, inviting readers to answer. Now, I’ll be posting some reader response and commenting on what I think the answer is to each question. Feel free to continue to post responses on any question after the one I’ve already answered (I’ll be going in order). The awesome Andy Wheeler replied to all 20 questions over on Pulse Wrestling. No one knows more about the WWE mindset than Wheeler, so be sure to give him a read. Let’s get going with the tenth TNA question:

Note: Answers to TNA questions 6 and 9 will be found on www.Pulsewrestling.com

10. Where did Matt Morgan's ring psychology go?

First, let’s cover his problems:

“Wherever it is, he must have lost it before he came to TNA because he hasn't had one good match outside that three match series with AJ (Styles). Almost all of his matches have had no flow nor built to anything, his selling is poor, and he's looked awkward and uncertain of what to do next a lot of the time.” - Calvin

So, in TNA he’s been bad.  He was nothing impressive in WWE either, so why do people think so highly of him?  First he’s a good athlete with a great look and size. And second:

Jim Cornette took it with him when he left. Or Abyss ate it. Best two theories I have.” – Brad Curran

This is honestly the main reason I have such faith in Morgan.  Jim Cornette swore he was the absolute best thing to come into wrestling in ages and could draw money if handled right.  Far be it from me to suggest TNA isn’t handling someone right, but he surely doesn’t look like the star he was billed as.

This is the problem with being a big man.  If you don't sell & take bumps, you're lazy. If you do sell & take bumps, you're betraying your character. I think Morgan's fine. He can be better, but I'm liking what I'm seeing.” - G

This is a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation.  While Morgan is improving, there have been those far bigger than the norm in wrestling history to sell and take bumps, yet maintain their character.

Morgan never had it. This is a guy who doesn't know how to work a good big man style. He should watch Mike Awesome and Sid Justice tapes and then give it a try.” – Thomas

I don’t suggest Sid and Awesome as examples, but that doesn’t mean none exist.   One easy one to check out is David Von Erich.  He was easily the biggest of his brothers, but still was among the best workers without coming off as an unbeatable monster or looking weak.  Scott Steiner, who’s right there on the roster, was a huge man for quite awhile and was still one of the best wrestlers in the world- Morgan could surely learn from him.  Guys like Bam Bam Bigelow and the Big Bossman (especially his All Japan work) were always good to great wrestlers and still managed to come off as top monsters.  With a little tape studying and applying of these principles, Morgan can reach his potential in the ring.

I specifically recall you saying nearly endlessly how Matt Morgan was the greatest thing in the history of the world, and NOW you're noticing that maybe he's not the second coming? He's big and athletic, but lots of great athletic guys just never "get it." Heck, Lance Hoyt is big and athletic, but no one's crying about he's a future main eventer.

Well, Hoytamania did run wild in the Impact Zone for a while and I've always been prone to mark for tall men who can moonsault. But yeah, Hoyt is a good example.
