You all know the drill by now, I’m sure. Time for WWE Question 15:
15. Why do none of the young guys on Raw get to work programs with guys that can make them better? Swagger has seriously gone from MVP to Kofi Kingston to Primo Colon.
“In most cases is because in WWE eyes, "they are not ready". How the hell can they be ready when they barely give them time to do anything and when they do give them time is with heatless jobbers. I don't know. This also is connected with that fear they have when it comes to put new guys with old stars.” – Antonio
Old guys that new wrestlers work with needn’t be stars. Finlay, Regal, Noble and probably quite a few others would help new guys improve.
“Lack of depth in main event stars. But Legacy and CM Punk both battled guys that can make them better, to rebound your question. If we pair up all the young guys with old, there isn't going to be much interest now is there?” – Homicidal
It doesn’t have to be main eventers, as stated right before, but, more importantly, there’s already so little interesting in the mid-card, that working with older guys who can really work would be a great improvement. And if that’s uninteresting, just do it with different guys at different times. Swagger vs. Finlay for a bit, then when that ends, MVP vs. Regal would run.
“Swagger's not "working a program" with Primo. Primo was just the first of presumably-many squash matches as Swagger continues to make his way up the card. I would not be surprised to see him get a legitimate upper-midcard program with an established face by next summer. WWE won't squander his career.” - Peter
I’ll never get this confidence that WWE won’t squander careers. Matt Morgan, Tomko and Bernard are all huge guys in the WWE mold who were cut to have great success elsewhere, with Bernard (formerly Prince Albert) especially turning out great. Average sized guys with a seeming world of potential, Ken Kennedy, Kenny Dykstra, Elijah Burke, and Lance Cade were all also not developed in the WWE. Even guys on the roster for a few years sometimes aren’t allowed to really work with wrestlers to develop in the ring, like MVP and to a lesser extent, Carlito.
“Miz and Cena (Despite Miz getting buried at the end)MVP and Jericho and Show, Legacy and DX. Looks like a few young guys are working with the big boys” – Cyrus
Miz got one real match with Cena, so that’s not a great example. I mean work a program, because that includes house shows, where even the underneath guys get longer matches and a chance to really learn. Some young guys are working with bigger stars, but there’s no excuse for it to happen on this limited of a basis, though, perhaps, it does tell us which young guys the WWE is serious about, though, again, worryingly, that doesn’t seem to include Swagger.
“Jack Swagger will transition into a feud with John Cena. It has to happen. Did everyone just black out like FlashForward during his match with Cena at the Draft? Jack needs to re-establish himself as a rookie monster, and if it means him flattening Chavo and Santino for a few months, so be it.” – Andy Wheeler
That’s great, but if it’s all he’s been doing he won’t be ready for Cena. If you listen to shoot interviews of the territory era guy the difference between a great worker and a crappy one is the quality of wrestler he was put around early in his career.
“Who's around to make Swagger look better, though, besides Shawn, who is busy? Bourne's pretty much it, and he's been a JTTS on Raw. WWE and TNA both lack guys who can make everyone look good like Perfect, Flair, Benoit, etc. used to, which is one of the big problems they face with guys like Shawn getting ready to hang it up. That could be a big reason behind hiring Danielson and Nigel.” – Brad Curran
So much for Nigel. Bourne really needs to be built up and put over some serious wrestlers so he has the credibility to be high enough on the card and help all of these young heels improve. Finlay being on Raw is also a step in the right direction, but that show badly needs some serious, experienced wrestlers or it will never develop any stars- and as much as Triple H will get the blame, it will only belong to him for not working to make the next generation good enough.
