This is the Top 100 American Matches ever list. Here is the preamble for the list; please read it to stave off complaints. The list is absolutely a work in progress and I am more than happy to watch anything that you, the reader, might recommend (assuming I can find it, so suggesting somewhere I can get the DVD it’s a part of or download the match would help). I have quite a backlog of matches, mostly from the territories, which I’m working through currently for the list. This next link will take you to an explanation of what makes a great match, which, again, should be read before the list. This list is centered around what happens in the ring, so I try to not discount for run-ins and such too much, but also that you won’t find matches like Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant or vs. the Rock on here, not because they aren’t great, they are, but because they’re great moments, not great matches where the drama comes from what the audience brings in, not what the wrestlers do. Now, here’s the list.

30. Ric Flair vs. Sting (NWA World Title) – 3/27/88, Clash of the Champions
29. Shawn Michaels vs. Mankind (WWF World Title Match) – 9/22/96, In Your House: Mindgames
28. Kerry Von Erich vs. Jerry Lawler (AWA vs. WCCW Unification Match) -5/88
27. Samoa Joe vs. CM Punk (ROH World Title Match) – 10/16/05, Joe vs. Punk II
26. Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Ole Anderson, and JJ Dillson, vs. Dusty Rhodes, Nikita Koloff, The Road Warriors, and Paul Ellering (War Games) - 7/4/87
War Games follow a simple formula of heel control, then face revenge, but this one is special as its Dusty’s ultimate revenge against the Horsemen, who beat and batter him at every turn, as he brings in the former communist enemy and huge powerhouse Nikita Koloff, and the biggest tag team in the world, the Road Warriors. To add to the fun, this is the one time they could all get there hands on the nefarious manager, JJ Dillon in the match. What a rush.
25. Kurt Angle vs. Chris Benoit (WWE World Title Match) - 1/19/03, Royal Rumble
During Angle’s amazing hot streak, he had one incredible rival that stood apart in the ring and that was Chris Benoit. This was easily their best match and Angle’s best of his career, though it’s only Benoit’s second best American performance.
24. Shawn Michaels vs. Diesel (WWF World Title Match) - 4/28/96, IYH: Good Friends, Better Enemies
Why Shawn Michaels is considered by many to be the best performer ever? Exhibit A: He carried Kevin Nash to one of the twenty five greatest matches I’ve ever seen.
23. Harley Race vs. Ric Flair (NWA World Title Cage Match) – 11/24/83, Starrcade
Harley Race was the man and Flair was just an upstart, so Race went out and made a star. Think it stuck?
22. Brian Pillman vs. Jushin Lyger (WCW Cruiserweight Title Match) - 2/29/92, Superbrawl 2
The match that changed everything by bringing the New Japan juniors consciousness over to the States. A fast paced, high impact match that still manages to build a compelling story, Pillman and Lyger walked into the ring and changed the wrestling world.
21. Kenta Kobashi vs. Samoa Joe – 10/1/05, Joe vs. Kobashi
Kenta Kobashi went into NOAH and became the top draw in Japan and best worker for the first half of this decade. When he came to America, he was placed against ROH’s ace and top wrestler Samoa Joe, who proceeded to throw everything in his arsenal, and everything in a few choice Kobashi opponents’ arsenals at the Japanese legend.
20. Triple H vs. Cactus Jack (Street Fight) – 1/20/00, Royal Rumble
Cactus Jack replaced Mankind, as Foley sent his most dangerous persona against the corrupt Triple H who married Stephanie McMahon for power. This is the war that made Triple H a real main eventer and draw.
19. KENTA vs. Bryan Danielson (ROH World Title Match) – 9/15/06, Glory by Honor V Night 2
Here is where Danielson really cemented his legacy as the best independent wrestler. Facing the incredibly stiff KENTA with a badly hurt shoulder, he went out and let KENTA kick the shit out of his hurt arm, working counters and selling amazingly until he was the biggest babyface possible. KENTA had his number, so Danielson was able to liberally borrow from other opponents to take control and try and keep his title safe in a truly epic performance.
18. Nick Bockwinkel vs. Curt Hennig (AWA Title Match) – 11/86, AWA TV
Every time I see this I want more Bockwinkel. Without Vince’s raids, AWA could have put on incredible, epic matches like this constantly. It’s a shame Hennig’s prime was so short, really from like a year before this to 1991, because he really was one of the best ever at this point.
17. Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart – 3/20/94, Wrestlemania X
The best opener in wrestling history also might have the simplest and smartest story. Owen, the jealous brother, wants revenge on Bret, who he feels is stealing the limelight. Bret doesn’t want to face his brother, but finally consents to set this up.
16. Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon (Ladder Match) – 8/27/95, Summerslam
The second ladder match between these two was really the third in the WWF ever. When Bret Hart invented the idea, he had more psychology in mind, but when Shawn and Razor added the bumps to that psychology, the match that followed stole the show.
15. Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart (Cage Match) – 8/29/94, Summerslam
The brothers Hart were simply the best storytellers in wrestling and when they locked up, with Owen’s history of jealousy, and his one big moment (see number 17) taken away by Bret’s title win later that evening, when they locked up again, the match was amazing.
14. Shawn Michaels vs. Undertaker (Hell in a Cell) – 10/5/97, IYH: Bad Blood Shawn
This is so great it puts even their recent Wrestlemania match to shame. Shawn bumped like a maniac for the Deadman and Taker replied by giving Shawn some of the best counters and near-victories around. The first Hell in the Cell made the gimmick that’s still relevant today.
13. Sting, Ricky Steamboat, Barry Windham, Nikita Koloff and Dustin Rhodes vs. Arn Anderson, Steve Austin, Rick Rude, Bobby Eaton and Larry Zybsko (War Games) – 5/17/92, Wrestle War
The Dangerous Alliance formed of some of Wrestling’s top heels, the first four on their list being amazing wrestlers who don’t always get their due in the ring. Zybsko isn’t the wrestler the others are, but is a true heat magnet. Against them were some amazing faces, with Sting, Steamboat, Windham and Rhodes all excellent at taking beatings and making comebacks and Koloff still an absolute beast at cleaning up. What you get in the end is the War Games with the absolute best in-ring quality.
12. Triple H vs. Steve Austin (3 Stages of Hell) – 2/25/01, No Way Out
When Austin and Helmsley finished their ages long feud, they did it in style, with three gimmick matches, in a two-out-of-three falls match. 2001 was the year Triple H was the best in the world and Austin was never a slouch in the ring, especially with storytelling and intensity. This match is truly an epic.
11. Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat (NWA World Title Match) – 2/20/89, Chi Rumble
The first of Flair and Steamboat’s epic series felt like what is was- a late 80s NWA title match. It was an amazingly good one, but still only the fifth best NWA Title Match of that era.
10. Magnum TA vs. Tully Blanchard (US Title, Steel Cage, I Quit Match) – 11/25/85, Starrcade
The most brutal match ever. How often do you get I quit after the match is already in a cage. If you ever wonder how Magnum would be as a top guy if not for the accident, watch this and see the perfect Hogan with skills, or if Tully had to lead the Horsemen, realize how fully capable he was. I’ve never seen guys sell hate like these two and probably never will again.
9. Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart (I Quit Match) – 3/23/97, Wrestlemania XIII
The most famous double-turn in wrestling history came at the end of a technical masterpiece. You won’t get more subtlety or intensity than this one.
8. Ric Flair vs. Barry Windham (NWA World Title Match) - 1/20/87, NWA Worldwide
A part of the period where Windham was the top American worker and he’d go out and show it night in, night out. Here he gets Flair in my favorite hour-draw ever.
7. Ric Flair vs. Terry Funk (NWA World Title I Quit Match) – 11/15/89, Clash of the Champions IX
Pure brutality as the legendary Funk returns an older man to take back his title from a prime of life Ric Flair and gets insanely violent to try and do it. If you ever want to know how some people consider Funk superior to Flair, this is a good place to start.
6. Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat (2 out of 3 Fall NWA World Title Match) – 4/2/89, Clash of the Champions VI
The most complete match of the Flair-Steamboat series and could easily be higher were it not built upon so beautifully by the finale.
5. Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Benoit (WWE World Title Match)– 3/14/04, Wrestlemania XX
The best 3-way ever, with amazing roles defined for each man, an absolute masterpiece in working all three wrestlers into the match at once without anyone lying around outside and a perfect finish.
4. Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin – 11/17/96, Survivor Series
Sure the Wrestlemania match gets the hype, but this was a technically superior bout as Bret, the ultimate hero of his era, took on the Stone Cold character when he was still a sociopath bastard. This is the high of where amazing technical wrestling meets amazing WWE style and the template for Stone Cold vs. other great technical wrestlers like Benoit and Angle.
3. Rey Misterio vs. Eddie Guerrero (Cruiserweight Title vs. Mask) – 10/26/97, Halloween Havoc
Eddie is simply the best at playing a cheating, dastardly bastard of a heel and here, with him picking on the beloved, tiny flier, he came off as a bully and a coward of the highest order… which was enough to take us into the premier cruiserweight match in America, ever, as two of the best ever threw everything at one another, at the top of their respective games.
2. Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat (Intercontinental Title Match) – 3/29/87 – Wrestlemania III
An intricately plotted masterpiece that made Steamboat into the ultimate conquering hero and Savage seem like a complete sadist of a villain. This was so good that even in the kayfabe world of 1987 it stole the heat of the biggest main event ever, Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant, and manages to hold up better than pretty much anything else from the 80s today.
1. Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat (NWA World Title Match) – 5/7/89, Wrestlewar
This match marks the end of the most legendary series in American history and the peak of the NWA style in America that had been building and evolving for more than fifty years. This is number one not because it’s a five star match with a load of history that builds on other matches, but because it’s a five star match watched without any lead in and only gets better if you’ve seen the earlier matches.

You can pick nits, or complain or do what you like, but this is an impressive undertaking. Some picks I disagree with, some order I would change, some matches I feel I need to see (notably HBK vs. Double J), still this is as good a list as you'll get reflecting on man's opinion. All of these matches are worth tracking down, and this can at worst serve as a great primer of the last 30 years or so of American pro-wrestling.
Ir has taken me years to appreciate Steven Regal and it is too bad some of his early work with Benoit in the WCW cannot make the list. It seems Regal was always the man too push the next big thing over and never became the next big thing himself.
#102 of course was Bill Goldberg defeating Brad Armstrong at WCW SuperBrawl VIII in 1998.
Watch Bret vs Nash because you told me to tell you, but check out the Rumble 94 one and Suv. Series one. The King of the Ring was is alright, but not enough to make a 100 list, and do not waste your time with the cage match. cheers.
This is an excellent list. I would argue for the mysterious Pillman-Liger match from East Rutherford over the Superbrawl II match.
I agree with Okori. Awesome list, Glazer. There isn't a match I can think of that you didn't include on here. Well done, my friend.
I want to see the East Rutherford one, but can't find it!
Truly a great list Aaron. For other recommendations, I would say that Aries/Strong-Briscoes match from the UK and any of those wild brawls that The Rockers had with Rose & Somers from the AWA. And come to think of it any of the great matches The Rockers had with Arn & Tully in WWF. Damn, Shawn Michaels really is the best out there.
And I think you probably chose to leave Royal Rumble matches out by design but Rumble '92 and Rumble '04 are fantastic.
I do have to say that I'm impressed with the amount of time you spent on this list. I was delighted to see Foley vs HBK at Mind Games on here. Even to this day I thought the match was a classic; nice to know I'm not alone.
However, I don't recall Number 31, Jarrett vs HBK, as a WWF Title match in 1995. Michaels won the belt in 96, and Jarrett never held the title. What gives?
Mark Aries/Strong vs. Briscoes is from the UK, otherwise it would surely be on here. As would HBK vs. Cena, Nigel vs. Danielson and, really high up, Bret vs. British Bulldog. I limited the list to America or Canada though, otherwise it really gets out of control. Ive seen two Rockers vs. Somers and Rose matches and think they top out at around *** ½. The Brainbusters vs. The Rockers are usually a low **** because of silly finishes. I swear I saw one more once, but cant remember where. If I ever find it, Ill add it.
Gojira, sorry about HBK-JJ, its for the IC Title not the World belt. Its fantastic- a mix of Shawns flying and the southern style. Its on the most recent HBK DVD that came out. Hit me up and Ill find it for you online.
Oh yeah, completely overlooked your American and Canadian soil rule. My bad.
I've not seen half of these matches. I should probably get on that.
Fantastic list, really. A lot of great matches from all eras. The only thing I have a problem with is the serious overrating of Steamboat/Savage. Yes, at the time it blew everybody minds with how good it was, but you honestly put it above Joe/AJ '05, or Benoit/Angle in '03, or Benoit/HHH/HBK at WM20? Its like the people who put Citizen Kane at the top of the "Best movie ever" list. Its pretty damn good film, and a lot of things it does were incredibly innovative at the time, but theres a lot of better films out there.
Besides that though, great job
A few matches I would have found a spot for
-TLC 3(the one on SD with Jericho/Benoit after that classic match against Austin/HHH; Benoit brought a great structure and drama with his injury selling and comeback
-Rock/Triple H in '98 Summerslam Ladder match >>> Backlash '00
-Austin/Angle at SS01(only marred by its non-finish, but that didn't stop Mankind/HBK from being a classic).
Although I don't agree with the ordering of some of this, the matches listed are very good. I will probably put this in my favourites.
As for a suggestion, Chris Benoit vs Finlay from Judgment Day 2006 might squeeze on there.
JP- thanks for the comments. As much as I'd love to fit Finlay vs. Benoit in, it just doesn't quite make it. I really wish Finlay got more time for his matches. If he did he'd be on here a few times.
Jeremy- I actually think in everything but moves Steamboat vs. Savage is better than those matches you mentioned. It's got a far tighter focus and is better at drawing real, heart-felt emotion from fans. Angle-Benoit is an awesome sprint, but really lacks the focus on every move of Steamboat Savage. Joe vs. AJ is a really fancy version of the usual awesome big-man vs. little-man dynamic... but the moves are what make it stand apart and its really no better than Brock-Edddie or Nash vs. HBK. The triple threat is really close, but I can't quite put it higher. For all its awesomeness, and it is the best 3-way ever, there are storytelling and logic pitfalls in a 3-way it and nothing else ever quite escape.
TLC 3 I feel is close to the bottom but doesn't quite make it. It adds just a bit of structure and selling from one team, which just makes the whole thing feel a bit off, since the others are just doing their usual stick.
Triple H vs. Rock ladder match is great, but just not good enough to me. I'll rewatch Angle vs. Austin since I don't remember it well enough.
wow way to many ric flair matches in top 10
Well, which of the Flair matches shouldn't be top 10?
No Briscoes vs. Steenerico from Death Before Dishonor V Night 1? It's one of the best all out crazy street fights i've ever seen. It should definitely be on the list. but atleast you have AJ vs. London on here even though i think it should be #1. you gonna do a top 100 International or Japanese Matches Ever list? you should.
undertaker vs batista wm23
undertaker vs edge summerslam08 hell in cell match is top ten matches
Mr. Cake - I don't think I could do a top 100 international. There's too much to watch and I don't know where to start. Maybe 1 day a top 100 puro. As far as that Briscoes brawl, it's great, but they basically repeated it with AOTF the next year. It's awesome and intense and damn near the bottom of the list.
SorryUSman, I don't feel either of those is quite good enough, though the HIAC is close, its too reliant on earlier encounters.
I think the greatest match ever was the Hardyz vs Edge and Christian ladder match from No Mercy 1999. I dont know how the TLC matches make it on here and the ladder match doesnt.
I started to get worried when I didn't see any Flair matches for quite a while, but you did a nice job putting many of his classics near the top.
I was also glad to see his match vs. Windham in the Top 10. I agree completely. This is an often underlooked match that was an absolutely classic.
The one thing your list is grossly negligent on is ECW. Jerry Lynn vs. Rob Van Dam belongs in the top 5, and top 100 matches should at the very least include Sabu vs. Terry Funk Barbed Wire, RVD vs. Sabu (take your pick), Mike Awesome vs. Masato Tanaka vs. Taz (November to Remember), Super Crazy vs. Tajiri vs. Little Guido.
Your top 10 is very good, but you need to add some old ECW.
Are you joking??
99. Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels Iron Man Match 3/31/96- Wrestlemania XII ?????
It should be in the top 10, idiot.
Does anything from the recent Dragon Gate USA ppv's qualify in your eyes? In particular the Young Bucks match or even Shingo v Doi? Not nit-picking - it's a great list - but just curious to see what you thought of those two matches.
mr aaron i appreciate all the time and effort u put into making this list and a helluva list it is me being a true wrestling fan i have seen and own most of the matches in the list however there is a few i think shud be in there like the 1st ever elimination chamber match in which shawn wins the title gre8t match wud be top 50 4 me and another shawn match summerslam 2002 hbk versus hhh in shawns return match after 4 years of no wrestling really a perfect match cuda done the ending a lil better with the quick roll up pin. thought when hhh hit shawn with the sledge thought was brilliant made the character of hhh and really built the hatred of the rivarly the only match in the series that sucked was the last 1 inside hell in a cell they did a good job with it but now adays there aint very many gr8 matches even the deathmatch scene started by old ecq of coarse has went downhill i like the tournays of deaths gre87 ideas anyways fantastic list just a few missing
undertaker and edge complete spot fest actually shty match and the wm23 match with batista wasnt gr8 they didnt tell a story at all they dont even deserve honorable mention and has 4 the hardy and edge and chrstian ladder match it was decent thought the summerslam match was better just being a spot feast but the best of that series by far the wm17 match also the rock and austin at wm17 was a gre8 match only downfall was wwe trying 2 turn steve into a heel which sucked i think randy orton versus rick flair at taboo tuesday inside a steel cage shud be in thetop 80 just cuz of the talent and the gre8ness of the match i know i kinda am going on and on not trying 2 crticize just trying 2 give my opinon i think flair versus undertaker at wm was a gd match top 90 on my list also sabu versus terry funk born 2 be wired even tho considered garbage wrestling by most was a gd match top 70 and finally the hardcore homecoming 3 way dance sabu versus franchize versus terry nrbw match gre8 match 30
also i think it wud be kinda neat 4 u 2 do a top 100 worst matches ever that wud be interesting like the tna electrified cage match awful lol u shud really think about doing the top 100 worst and maybe like a top 50 of deathmatch wrestling
Brandon: PLEASE punctuate your sentences. A period here or a comma there would make your comments much easier to read.
While I disagree with the order of the list, I've gotta say it looks pretty complete. Everything from spotfests to garbage matches to technical masterpieces is included, with no huge bias one way or the other (unless you count the Flair-heavy top 10 as an exception).
Good list.
I liked the list, it was interesting. Although Kurt Angle vs Brock Lesnar, and Shawn Michaels vs Shelton Benjamin should of been on thier. I don't think all those Triple H matches deserve to be one this list. The guy is pretty boring in the ring and shouldn't be on a list with greats like Bret Hart, Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, and Chrisopher Danials.
This is a great list....and I don't mean to be picky but I noticed a couple of technical errors....first, the Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels match you have from Survivor Series isn't from 1995, as listed...they fought at Survivor Series 92....next, you have Shawn Michaels against Jeff Jarrett from IYH 95 listed as a WWF Title Match but it wasn't...it was for the IC Title....otherwise, the list is good....except for the WM XII Iron Man...it should be top ten...it revolutionized the industry
E. E. Faulk clearly does not know what he is talking about. It's quite comical, really.
Stay tuned- a fine tuned, version 2.0 of this list is coming soon.
This is a pretty good list but Flair in the top 10 four times. He is a great worker but I dont think any of his matches touch Hart vs Michaels WM 12 whitch you have at 99. That was the best Iron man match I have ever seen. For the most part though good list.
you missed the jeff hardy vs rob van dam ladder
match of summerslam 2001
I love how Kevin Nash isn't on here. Haha. Great list.
john cena vs baste 2008 summer slam f u c k y o u
I'm glad the Rey Mysterio/Eddie Guerrero match from halloween havoc 97' got put high. We will probably never see another match like that on a major company. never to be duplicated.
no.41 think ull find it was at no way out and not no morecy u idiot
what about No Mercy 2007 Randy Orton vs Triple H Last Man Standing for WWE Championship
Justin, u might want to look at #24. I hope to God that you are aware that Diesel is Kevin Nash.
Very comprehensive list, but the exclusion of the Wrestlemania XII main event, and that too in the top 100, made me lose all respect for this list.
Pfft. Rubbish list. Kurt Angle V AJ Styles Hard Justice is one of the best matches ever. Austin and Rock Wrestlemania in Houston was also up there along with Steamboat v Savage WM3, there's your top 3 right there.
Great list, but I'm interested why no one has mentioned Mankind v Undertaker Hell In A Cell 98. This match was surly one of the most dramatic. Unlike the chaos of the TLC matches, the violence was so methodical and controlled. The tension was tangable, right from the moment both wrestlers first climbed on top of the cell. Each shocking moment was given time to be disected by JR and King, making it like watching an entire movie rather than a simple wrestling match.
Where the hell is Undertaker vs Mankind? This is just the #1 of all time!
I have to agree. Hell in the Cell Undertaker Vs.Mankind should be on the list.
Besides that, I havent seen no Hulk Hogan matches on the list or that anyone mentioned. I am not a fan of him, I was always like the bad guys. But I think The Rock vs Hollywood or Hulk Hogan was a great match! I think it was the one when he was Hollywood Hogan at Wrestlemania 18 I think. Crowd goes nuts! I will let you know if I think of anymore.
I appreciate the time and effort you put into this but I have a few recommendations for you:
1.Where is the ECW matches
2.Get off the NWA and Ric Flairs dick
3.Stop making lists
You need to watch some more classic matches and quit clinging to the damn NWA and WCW
