WWE Question 8: I’ve posted 20 questions on WWE, TNA and the Indies, inviting readers to answer. Now, I’ll be posting some reader response and commenting on what I think the answer is to each question. Feel free to continue to post responses on any question after the one I’ve already answered (I’ll be going in order). The awesome Andy Wheeler replied to all 20 questions over on Pulse Wrestling. No one knows more about the WWE mindset than Wheeler, so be sure to give him a read.
8. Is Matt Hardy the biggest mark for himself in WWE right now?
“When did you become Paul London? Hard to say, at any rate. If nothing else, someone really ought to keep him off the damn internet already.” – Brad Curran
So, to keep him off the ‘net, you’re saying he should take the heat for all Jeff’s drugs and go to jail? I totally agree.
“Yeah he is. He needs to stop being delusional and stop blaming others for his faults. Improve yourself, lose weight, get better in the ring, work on your mic skills and you will be pushed. He can blame his lack of push on a million things. But if he improves himself, they have no choice but to push him. Get better and the push will come. Responsibility and hard work will get you far. Sitting around sucking your own dick while complaining with a cheese burger in your hand, changes nothing.” – Nocturn
Oh, I fully agree.
“Quite possibly, but don't forget that he has a number of devoted fans (as does Jeff) who believe anything that he or Jeff says. Just look at when Matt said he didn't bail Jeff out of jail. All of the fanatical Hardy fans truly believed it, but then the police released their report stating that Matt did bail Jeff out. So with fans who are that stupidly devoted, it is no surprise if he is a mark to himself.” – A. Dust
Everyone, down to the insane death-match workers, has stupidly devoted fans. This is wrestling and it’s no excuse. The man clearly has a history of lying and playing games.
Though there were a number of responses like this:
“Nobody beats Triple H in the category.” – Mario
I’ve been an outspoken critic of Triple H in the past, but come on. There’s no doubt that the man absolutely loves wrestling, especially classic wrestling, like nothing else, as seen by his continual trying to re-launch War Games. He’s a favorite of numerous classic wrestlers, from those who gain from him, like Ric Flair and Harley Race, to those who have nothing to do with him like Gabe Sapolsky and the legendary Buck Robley. He’s draw legit money, had amazing feuds and matches, and is always over. You simply can’t say any of that for Matt Hardy, so while Triple H certainly loves himself, he, at least has reason, unlike Matt. Same goes for Mick Foley, Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan and even Kurt Angle- all huge marks for themselves, but at least they earned it.
We’ll finish up with these two comments (the links within the column have examples of him being a mark for himself):
“Matt Hardy isn’t a mark, he’s delusional. He doesn’t love himself, he just thinks that everyone else does because once a long time ago people thought it was messed up that the company fired him for his girlfriend cheating on him with a better worker. Oh, and because he once said ROH on television.” – Andy Wheeler
And finally, from Homicidal:
“Matt Hardy is awful; nobody including himself should be a fan of his.”

>:(
As much as I love Matt, it's like I was saying earlier. He hasn't reached the point where he can get away with being full of himself. He's not a bad worker, but he's not as over as Jeff. And Jeff? If Jeff never wrestles again, he won't be remembered for his world title reigns, he'll be remembered for TLC.
Same with Matt.
Guys like Hunter, Shawn, Taker, Cena, Orton. They've been on the top long enough that people will remember them for their main event runs.
People will say Hunter is his own biggest mark, but is he really? He's over to the point where he's never going to lose his heat, and no matter what he does he will always be the kind of worker that fans will see as a legitimate champion or championship contender. He's allowed to put himself over, because he knows that his character is good for the business.
Triple H putting someone over? That can mean something in someones career. Matt doing it? Nice debut in the midcard!
