The TNA 20 Questions are almost done! Come back tomorrow for the Bound for Glory preview that will serve as the final answer to the TNA set of questions, but first, here's how TNA should introduce Colt Cabana.
20. If TNA manages to sign Colt Cabana, how should he be used?
“Introduce him to us with vignettes and promos and then put him in matches, if he's any good he'll take his opportunity and run with it, much like The Pope did.” – JTX
Vignettes are an important part of introducing a new wrestler to a national audience, whether it be The Million Dollar Man flaunting his money, Razor Ramon picking on people, Mr. Perfect being the perfect athlete, or, recently, CM Punk being a Straight Edge competitor, these vignettes offer insight and an introduction to new characters. From there, it is up to the wrestler to show what he can do once introduced. These vignettes alone don’t get a guy over, they just make the audience more willing to give him a chance and see what the hype is.
“I think they should start off by giving him a good amount of vignettes (at least one a week for a month) and then bring him in as a mid-card comedy guy who is also a competent wrestler. He should be programed against Daniels or someone else with a more serious gimmick who'd play well off of Cabana, could have some good matches with him, and has some credibility. It'd also be a good idea to not over script him as TNA's bookers have traditionally been pretty bad at writing comedy, and to keep him away from other comedy figures like Shark Boy, Jay Lethal, ODB, Cody Deaner, and Jeremy Borash who would drag him down.” – Calvin
Vignettes are definitely a great way to hype and introduce a new talent, as mentioned earlier, but Calvin raises another important point. Cabana must be kept with a straight man if he is to get over. His wacky brand of wrestling won’t be so amusing if he’s around other over-the-top gimmicks, especially with Vince Russo’s poor 8th grade level comedy.
““TNA should let him do "Good Times, Great Memories" for awhile to get his character over and show the audience how funny he is. It worked for Alex Shelley in TNA, it could work for Cabana.” - Gary
Gary adds a great idea to the vignettes. Along with these to hype his personality, an interview segment type show, like the Piper’s Pit or a good version of what Abraham Washington does on ECW would allow Colt to get over as a character, show his comedic chops, and put over other angles at the same time.
“In all reality I would like to see Colt as Legends champion. I would like the Legends title to be TNA's Intercontinental title. I would like to see that belt for the guys who are making their names in TNA. Right now there are 3 names TNA are building up: Lashley, Hernandez, Morgan. Those 3 are the perfect candidates to build the title around to test if they are going to be good future champion material.
A title also gives them all credibility.” - Thomas
This would certainly help Colt if he got over, taking and making the Legends title into a mid-card belt, but how do we get from the vignettes to the title? Well, first vignettes would air for a few weeks to let the company get used to the new comedic character that would be hosting his own show. These could be take-offs on commercials for other prominent late-night personalities like Jay Leno and Conan O’Brein. Once introduced, Colt Could use “Good Times, Great Memories” to interview and mock some of the heels on Impact, showing his wit and putting forward some angles. After a time, if he was over, he could interview the Legends Champion, who would go heel, challenging Colt to stop running his mouth and get in the ring. From there, Colt would use his antics and wrestling to confound the new heel, using trickery to get over and take the Legends title. That would be the perfect use of Colt Cabana, should TNA sign him.
