time after defeating her big sister Venus in the final
The Williams sisters met again in the Wimbledon final on Saturday, and the five time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams was not enough to knock off her little sister. Serena Williams had a very solid performance in the final, and, as always, played with passion and heart, which was enough to give her a 7-6 (3), 6-2 victory.
Serena now has eleven Grand Slams to her sister's seven. But Venus still leads in the Wimbledon category, having five titles of her own. Venus and Serena had both been phenomenal in every match leading up to the final, but with Venus defeating the number one ranked player in womens tennis 6-1, 6-0, and Serena struggling against the number four ranked womens player, Venus was the favorite.
Serena was just too good on Saturday. She served tremendously, firing 12 aces to Venus' two, and hit 25 winners and only 12 unforced errors. After the match Venus said, "Today she was too good. She had an answer for everything." In the on court interview after the match, Serena said, "I feel like I shouldn't be holding the trophy. It's named the Venus Dish, and she always wins. It hasn't settled in that I won."
Despite Serena winning the title, and holding three of the last four Grand Slams (U.S. Open, Australian Open, Wimbledon), Serena will not claim the number one spot in the WTA rankings, but instead stay behind Russian Dinara Safina, who has never won a Grand Slam in her career. This has drawn much controversy regarding the WTA ranking system. Serena, obviously frustrated by this, stated, "I think if you hold three Grand Slam titles maybe you should be number one, but not on the WTA Tour obviously...That's just shocking. But whatever. It is what it is. I'd rather definitely be number two and hold three Grand Slams in the past year than be number one and not have any." At least the world knows that Serena deserves the number one rank, despite the faulty WTA ranking system.
For now, Serena will forget about the rankings and enjoy being the Wimbledon champion.
Happy 4th of July to everyone.
