USFL questions UFL commish's chat comment

On Monday, Feb. 16, the UFL held its first live chat with league commissioner Michael Huyghue.

An answer to one of the questions raised eyebrows at the headquarters of the USFL, which is planning a return in the spring of 2010 (not fall as mistakenly asked in the chat question).

With the New USFL forming and starting play in the fall of 2010 do you think theres room for 2 new start up leagues?

COMMISSIONER HUYGHUE RESPONSE:

From what I know about the new USFL we are looking for two different type of players.  There may be some overlap of players but I do not see a problem with both leagues launching during the same season.  The USFL also claims to be a “minor league for the south”.  We are going to be a major league for all major places where pro football fans do not get to see the NFL play live.

On Tuesday, the new USFL's founder/chairman and CEO Michael Dwyer responded to the "minor league for the south" comment.

"I have no idea where that came from and I'd like to know," said Dwyer. "[Huyghue] couldn't be more wrong. There's not a shred of truth to it."

A quick peek at the current USFL site makes it pretty clear that it's not planning to be a "minor league for the south." The league looks to start with 12 teams based all across the country.

Within the next couple of months, the USFL expects to be making some huge announcements about its future plans. In the meantime, Dwyer saw no reason to comment on the UFL other than to "wish them the best of luck."

"We haven't made any statements about the UFL and we haven't taken any potshots," added Dwyer. "We're not going to get into any mudslinging."

The UFL will begin regular season play in October. At least seven cities will combine to host four franchises this season.

Do you think Huyghue got the new USFL confused with a different league? Share your comments on the USFL and the UFL below.

If it's happening in a league where they get paid to play, Andrew is covering it. NFL, CFL, UFL, USFL, AFL (if it still exists) -- keep it right...

I see no reason for these two organizations to go toe to toe. The reality is that there are way too many wanna be professional football leagues trying to start right away. What needs to happen is for the two most powerful of these wanna be leagues to get together and pool their talents and resourcess together. One league taking on the idea of going pro is a challenge in and of itself when dealing with the big bad NFL. If however these people get together with all their intelligence and knowledge of past failures of other leagues they can slowly grow into something special.

My worry is that egos are going to be too large and once again will destroy these leagues before they have chance. If they understand that they need to keep big name stars at a minimum to start out they can have a five year plan. In five years if all is going strong they can begin to add more big name talents. I would love for the spring league New USFL to work out. I get plenty of football in the fall but would love to have a quality league in the spring that is not AFL or CFL.
