Most teachers put their heart and soul into their jobs. This fall one Roland Park Country School (RPCS) teacher will be rewarded for his heart…his lesson plan on the human heart, that is.
David Brock, upper school science teacher at RPCS will start the 2010-2011 school year with a $2,500 gift certificate to purchase lab equipment for the school! Brock was the winner of the first annual Science WoRx “Make My LabWoRx” lesson plan competition sponsored by Astellas Pharma, US. His lesson plan on the anatomy and physiology of the human heart stood out as an exciting, inspiring and thought-provoking teaching tool that science teachers across the globe will be able to access.
“Both research and my teaching experience affirm that students learn best when their curiosity is engaged through active exploration,” says Brock. “For my lesson on the human heart, I wanted to create an activity that enabled my students to question the heart’s terminology, and to experience first-hand how it physically functions – hence my artificial heart models.” See his lesson here.
Brock reports that RPCS will use the gift certificate to replace broken or outdated equipment in its physics, biology and genetics labs. “I’m thrilled to receive the $2,500 prize from Astellas. Now science teachers at Roland Park Country School can continue to offer innovative and engaging lessons.”
To inspire the next generation of scientists in their students, Astellas created Science WoRx, a local mentoring program and online resource network for science teachers. The program connects teachers with lesson plans, in-classroom experiments, Astellas scientists, and each other to support their unmet needs in and outside the classroom.
