McDonogh School awarded $10 million gift for construction
Ownings Mills, MD -

Officials at McDonogh School in Owings Mills announced recently that it has been awarded a $10 million gift for construction of a new student center.

Edward St. John’s relationship with the private school began more than 30 years ago when his children attended classes there.

St. John’s contribution is the largest made to McDonogh by someone who is not an alumnus, according to school spokeswoman Lynn McKain.

The new center is “part of the campus master plan, which includes various construction projects,” McKain said. “The St. John contribution will be restricted toward construction of the new center, though no date to begin construction has been set.”

Headmaster Charles Britton added in a statement that the student center will be located centrally on campus so that it will complement and enhance several aspects of learning for all 1,283 of McDonogh’s students, from kindergarten through grade 12.

“We owe a great debt of gratitude to Ed St. John for enabling us to bring students and teachers together in this way,” Britton said.
