SAN FRANCISCO -

The San Francisco Police Department is offering two $10,000 rewards for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the drivers responsible for two fatal hit-and-run incidents in The City on Aug. 18 and 19.

The separate incidents claimed the lives of a 27-year-old Canadian naval sailor and a 77-year-old San Francisco resident. Canadian naval Lt. Mark Ashley, who was serving on Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Calgary docked at Pier 17, was struck in the early morning of Aug. 18 by a silver or gray Mercedes while crossing east on The Embarcadero at Howard Street, police said. The next day, Roger Tennyson, 77, was struck down on the 100 block of Sanchez Street after getting out of his vehicle.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the department’s Hit and Run Detail at (415) 553-1651 or (415) 575-4444.

Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital in Palo Alto ranked 10th, according to the survey. The top three children’s hospitals included the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the Children’s Hospital of Boston and the John Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, according to the magazine, which will hit newsstands Sept. 3.

GOLDEN GATE PARK

Dead coyote pup was related to animals shot in July

A coyote pup that was found dead in Golden Gate Park on July 26, apparently hit by a car, was determined to have been related to a male and female coyote that were shot July 15 after they attacked pet dogs on two instances during a weekend. The coyotes were shot near the Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park, and while officials with the San Francisco Department of Animal Care and Control searched for a den with offspring, they did not find one. However, last week, department head Carl Friedman confirmed that tissue samples taken from the dead pup were matched at a UC Davis laboratory to that of the female adult coyote.
