SAN FRANCISCO -

Carlos Garcia, the newly hired permanent superintendent of the San Francisco Unified School District, will attend his first school board meeting tonight.

Garcia replaces Gwen Chan, the interim schools chief, who, after nearly 40 years with the district, resigned this summer.

As is customary with the school board meetings, Garcia will address the school board with an opening speech.

MAYOR’S OFFICE

Newsom won’t be bound to abide by spending limits

Mayor Gavin Newsom, who is running for re-election this November, filed paperwork with The City’s Ethics Commission on Friday stating that he won’t be abiding by San Francisco’s voluntary campaign spending limit of $1,375,000.

Financial statements from Newsom’s campaign office show that nearly $1.6 million had been raised as of June 30, 2007.

Since Newsom has gone over the voluntary spending limit, it has been lifted for all other mayoral candidates as well.

Plan to rename Monster Park field after Walsh up for vote

A proposal to name the field at Monster Park after former Stanford and 49ers coach Bill Walsh will be discussed and possibly voted on at Thursday’s Recreation and Park Commission meeting.

Walsh, who died July 30 from complications of leukemia, was remembered last Friday by former players, coaches, team officials and fans in a public memorial at Monster Park.

The meeting will be held at 2 p.m. in City Hall, Room 416.
