SAN FRANCISCO -

The Board of Supervisors continued Tuesday an appeal requesting an environmental review of the health impacts of the more than 2,000 antennas that would be installed to set up a free wireless Internet network, under Mayor Gavin Newsom’s proposed agreement with Google and EarthLink.

San Francisco Neighborhood Antenna Free Union filed the appeal claiming the antennas emit levels of radio frequency that could cause health problems. The review would take about one year. The wireless antennas emit a frequency similar to cell phone antennas and are considered an acceptable range under federal guidelines. The board will vote on the appeal on July 24.

Public hearings for measures approved for November vote

The Board of Supervisors put on the ballot Tuesday with a 7-4 vote a measure that would require a public hearing for ballot measures submitted by members of the board and the mayor before going on a ballot. Currently, four board members or the mayor can put a measure on the ballot without a public hearing.

Also on Tuesday, Supervisor Chris Daly submitted legislation that would increase the spending cap of candidates running for a board seat from $86,000 to $140,000.
