SAN FRANCISCO -

Mayor Gavin Newsom’s controversial plan to establish a Tenderloin Community Justice Center is still in play, even though the $754,000 set aside for the center was reduced on Thursday to $500,000.

The Board of Supervisors Budget and Finance Committee reduced the amount during its review Thursday of Newsom’s proposed city budget and put it on reserve. The committee said it would consider releasing the funds when a more detailed plan is presented.

The center is modeled after New York City’s Midtown Community Court, which takes those who commit misdemeanors and low-level offenses, such as graffiti, prostitution and public urination, off the streets and into the court where they face penalties and are connected with services to help them turnaround their lives.

Mayor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday issued a directive aimed at reducing violence this summer.

In addition to calling for law enforcement resources to be enhanced at “hot spots,” the directive creates a “Summer Street Violence Prevention Council,” whose job is to assess city services for at-risk youth and those affected by violence, and focus those services on hot spots.
