American Indian festival to be held in Alexandria

Alexandria kicks off the first of its annual ethnic festivals this weekend with an American Indian event in Waterfront Park.

Members of the Cherokee, Ho-Chunk/Winnebago, Lakota, Dakota,

Onondaga, Chippewa, Seneca, Cataw

ba, Cree, Seminole, Lumbee, Crow and Mohigan tribes are expected to be on-hand to demonstrate traditional dancing and music. There will be displays of native arts and crafts, and booths selling traditional foods. A storyteller is also expected.

This year, the city will also hold Armenian, Chirilagua, African Heritage, Irish, Cambodian, Italian and Scottish Heritage Festivals.

The American Indian Inter-Tribal Cultural Organization is co-sponsoring Saturday’s event with the city.

The festival will be at Waterfront Park, 1 Prince St., 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free. For more information, contact 703-838-4844.
