A woman hit by a vehicle at the intersection of Fifth and Market streets Saturday remains in critical condition at San Francisco General Hospital, according to a San Francisco police dispatcher.

The accident, which occurred around 9:15 p.m., left the woman with a serious head injury, according to police.

The incident follows last week’s high-profile case involving a man who drove his car onto a Valencia Street sidewalk to run down another man, police said. That driver has been charged with murder, police said.

There were two other vehicular deaths in San Francisco last week. A 59-year-old man was killed March 18 when he stopped to change his tire on U.S. Highway 101. That same day, a J-Church Municipal Railway train killed a 40-year-old man near 18th and Church streets in what police are calling a suicide.

In 2005, the latest year data is available, 699 pedestrians were involved in nonfatal collisions, up 5 percent from the reported 665 incidents in 2004, according to The City’s Department of Parking and Traffic’s 2005 Collision Report.

Also in 2005, 14 pedestrians were killed in traffic-related collisions — the lowest total in the past 10 years, according to DPT.
