Despite rain on Federal Hill Friday, the one-day filming for the movie “Shooter” stayed right on target. Bringing in between $100,000 and $300,000 worth of economic development to a city per day, filming a movie is an economic boon to a local community, even if for one day.

In an area that has drawn shooting for television shows such as “Homicide” and “The Wire,” Federal Hill provides a picturesque view of Baltimore that attracts production companies and their dollars.

According to Jack Gerbes, the director of Maryland Film Office, there are many ways that filming, even for a short time, can do a lot for Baltimore residents.

“First of all, probably two out of three or three out of four of the people on the set are Maryland residents and are [working for] well-paying jobs,” Gerbes said. “Out-of-towners are staying at hotels, all the rental cars are local, the caterers have to buy food from local vendors, lumber [must be bought] from local places and office supplies [purchased locally as well]. They set up a company for the duration [of the filming].”

The film is based on the book “Point of Impact,” by Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post movie critic Stephen Hunter.
