Sherrill misses mark for Baltimore Orioles

Baltimore Orioles closer George Sherrill’s 3-2 fastball missed high-and-away to Chone Figgins with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth. The Orioles scored five runs off Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez in top of the inning, but spoiled that effort in the bottom half of the frame.

O’S FANS CHEERED …

When Melvin Mora drove home two runs with a double in the top of the ninth to tie the game at five. The four-run comeback was improbable against Rodriguez, but it was all for not, as the Angels put the game to rest moments later.

O’S FANS JEERED …

At the idea of Severna Park native Mark Teixeira in any uniform other than the orange-and-black. The Mount St. Joseph alum has long been “the one that got away” for Baltimore fans. He’ll be a free agent at season’s end, but Monday, he with 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored against his hometown club.

FANTASY STUD …

Vladamir Guerrero doesn’t hit baseballs. He hurts them. He took a 94-mph heater from Dennis Sarfate over the center field wall faster than the Orioles starter could turn around to see it land. The Angels outfielder’s 19th home run as part of a 2-for-5 night.

GOOD CALL …

By manager Dave Trembley for using George Sherrill despite trailing in the eighth inning. Sherrill set his career high for innings pitched in a season with Monday’s appearance, but he could use the work. Entering Monday, Sherrill had thrown just five innings since going 2.1 innings in the All-Star game last month.

BAD CALL …

Shoe-horning right-hander Dennis Sarfate into the starting rotation. The fireballer was making strides in middle relief when the Orioles asked him to fill a need in the starting rotation. He allowed five runs on six hits in three innings Monday.

IF ONLY …

The Orioles could get a solid effort out of all five starters every once in a while. The Orioles starters carried the team to a pair of wins in Seattle, but Sarfate put the team behind early. Even with four runs in the top of the ninth, the Orioles couldn’t complete the comeback.
