Company signals expanded Wi-Fi plan
SAN FRANCISCO -
Every neighborhood in San Francisco will have a network of wireless Internet access points by the end of the this year, according to Mayor Gavin Newsom and a firm working with The City. Meraki Inc., which relocated to San Francisco last week, launched its “Free the Net” program in July in an effort to spread Wi-Fi through a network of volunteers using equipment provided at no cost to the customer. The company also will provide Wi-Fi access to 3,200 public-housing units at 18 sites by the end of the year. “People act as relays and they are able to be receptors of sorts,” Newsom said. |
