Washington politicos are cause of high gas prices

Re: “U.S. needs more oil drilling, not higher taxes,” May 13

I completely agree that presidential candidate John McCain’s pandering-to-the-moderates-and-liberals doom-and-gloom global warming speech is nothing more than political expediency to garner the votes he needs (from independents and Democrats, no less) to be the GOP nominee.

And all this hullabaloo about him sidling up to and being a “conservative” is laughable beyond belief! He has one of the most liberal/moderate voting records in the U.S. Senate since he was first elected. And don’t get me started on the constitutionally gagging McCain-Feingold bill, binding our hands and mouths, and is a naked abridgment to our First Amendment rights. …

Only electing conservatives who are willing to take on far left special interests and their slavish Democratic politicians, and Al Gore’s far-reaching global warming agenda, will be the only way to reverse years of socialism and its inherent destruction of sound energy policies that promote free and unrestricted markets around the world.

Congress guilty of aiding and abetting in oil “scam”

As in your editorial, Congress has received much criticism lately over their placing of much of our own oil resources off limits to drilling. However, this is not the only thing they have done to limit domestic oil production.

At present, most domestic oil is produced by small independent drillers rather than major oil companies. The adverse effect the alternative minimum tax had on these drillers has received little attention. The AMT taxed their income without allowing the deduction of many expenses and, consequently, seriously stifled domestic drilling.

Oil company executives found guilty of deliberately contriving a shortage to make excessive profits would receive stiff prison sentences. Yet, by discouraging domestic drilling, Congress is guilty of aiding and abetting the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries in this same scam — actually, a far worse scam as much of our wealth is being handed to foreign producers.

Whites need not apply

Re: “Colorblind government is a joke,” May 12

Kudos for Melanie Scarborough. I am retired from the employ of the U.S. National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. All the time I worked there, they always celebrated special “cultural awareness” months for various non-Caucasian people, but never for any white nationalities of people.

The cultures of the various European nations were given no recognition or honor of any kind while I was there. The political message was very clear: There is to be a big disparity in the way agency officialdom honors various segments of its work force, in favor of its non-white constituency. The various white nationalities working in that agency have no place or worth there, by contrast.

Speed cameras? No problem!

Re: Agree/Disagree, May 12

Speed cameras just take a picture and thus provide a piece of evidence. They make no presumptions, only a person can do that.

Laundry list of Fenty issues

Who is the real Slim Shady in the District of Columbia? Mayor Adrian Fenty hired an outsider as chancellor of D.C. Public Schools, but she does not have equal qualifications as our neighboring jurisdictions’, Fairfax County, Va., and Montgomery, Md., school superintendents.

Next, he appointed as D.C. Chief Prosecutor Linda Singer who never practiced law or had one hour of court experience. Is this Mayor Fenty’s hope or incompetence?

Everyone observed Eastern Market’s flames glowing as high as its ceiling, but chemicals burn black clouds as we witnessed while in our fireplace wood burns grayish smoke. And Chief Rubin asserted — guessed? — that the fire started in a trash bin outside the market’s brick wall. …

Chief Rubin and WASA need to repair our fire hydrants and provide the needed water pressure or soon a simple one-alarm fire will increase to a three-alarm killer of a citizen or helpless child. …
