Bail denied for elderly man accused of attacking wife with hammer A judge denied bail Wednesday for an elderly Columbia man accused of attacking his wife with a hammer, according to the Howard State’s Attorney’s Office. Visiting Baltimore County District Judge Patricia Pytash ordered Calvin Payne, 83, of the 6200 block of Satinwood Drive, be held without bail at the Howard County Detention Center. Payne was charged with attempted murder and assault after his wife, Alma Payne, 81, reported the attack to police Monday evening. Howard police said they found a bloody hammer in the bedroom. At the bail hearing, the couple’s son, Cedric Payne, said his father is too dangerous to be released; the elderly man’s nephew, Eric Figueroa, said he is a violent man. Alma Payne’s family said she is being treated for head injuries and several broken fingers at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore City. – Carolyn Peirce and wire reports 17-year-old shot to death in West Baltimore A 17-year-old was shot and killed Tuesday night in West Baltimore. Police found the teenager’s body at 10:16 p.m. in the 2900 block of Presbury Street, said Baltimore City police spokesman Officer Troy Harris. He said there are no suspects in the killing. The teen’s slaying is the 67th this year in the city, compared with 100 at this time last year. – Luke Broadwater |
