Off-duty police officer fatally shoots robber An off-duty D.C. police officer shot and killed a man who tried to rob him at a Northeast Washington gas station early Wednesday morning, police said. The officer was attempting to get gas at a service station on the 900 block of Brentwood Road when he was approached by an armed suspect, police said. The officer drew his service weapon and fired, striking the man, police said. The man was transported to an area hospital and pronounced dead. His identity is being withheld pending positive identification and the notification of the next of kin. A weapon was recovered at the gas station. Police continue to investigate. The officer was not injured and was placed on routine administrative leave with pay. He is 53 and a 33-year veteran of the Metropolitan Police Department assigned to the Forensic Sciences Division. His identity is being withheld because he is considered a witness in the case, police said. 12-year-old assaulted for shoes and backpack A 12-year-old boy walking home from his Woodbridge bus stop Monday afternoon was beaten up by a group of youths wearing black bandannas over their faces, who stole his backpack and sneakers. The boy, walking on Blue Pool Drive in Woodbridge, was attacked from behind and suffered minor injuries, police said. No one was charged in the theft and assault, Prince William Police spokeswoman Erika Hernandez said. - Dan Genz Seven more teens accused of traffic disturbances Seven more Manassas-area teens were arrested on suspicion of setting up lawn ornaments, chairs, branches, toys, boulders and other items in the middle of Prince William County Parkway. Three adult students were arrested last month following a crash in which a tree branch, tire and boulder placed in the thoroughfare sent two people to the hospital with injuries.
