Traditional English residence in Burlingame hills features Old World-type architecture
You may picture the quintessential artist toiling away in a steel-and-concrete loft, but painter Jann Pollard says her traditional English home in the Burlingame hills provides all the inspiration she needs.
Pollard, her husband and her two young children moved into the home almost 30 years ago. At the time, she was an interior designer, specializing in restaurant interiors.
“I had studied a lot of architecture,” she recalls. “The Old World look was very charming to me.”
Pollard was an interior designer for 25 years, taking fine-art workshops and classes all the while. Finally, in 1985, she got a solo show at The Gallery in Burlingame. Soon, she was a full-time artist.
“I’ve never been sorry [to have given up interior design],” she says.
Pollard’s work centers around landscapes and paintings of
classically designed buildings — much like the one she has called home for a generation. In her 30 years at 105 La Mesa Drive, she has, on occasion, stepped outside and simply painted her backyard.
The backyard — a large expanse with multilevel decks, hedges, flower beds, brick patios and a gazebo, is definitely art-worthy.
“I grew up on a farm in Iowa, and I’ve loved living in this country-style home,” Pollard says.
The Pollards have maintained the home’s original period details. Open beams decorate the living and dining rooms, and arched doorways are the norm, rather than the exception.
This year, Pollard’s husband retired. She continues to teach at Filoli Gardens, but is also teaching and working internationally. She will maintain a West Coast presence through her work at Filoli and will continue to sell work through her Web site at www.jannpollard.com, but with one grown child on each coast, Pollard and her husband will relocate to the East Coast.
“It’s been a wonderful house. We’ve loved it,” Pollard says of her Burlingame English country home. “It’ll be tough to leave.”
